Overview

Starting with a Japanese or Western-style breakfast at a local favourite organic cafe, you will make your own Goshuin (original washi notebook) which are used to collect the calligraphy seals and stamps when visiting temples and shrines in Japan before taking a short walk to a local secret shrine where you will learn about the history of shrines and temples in Japan, how to correctly pay your respects, collect an omikuji (Japanese fortune-telling paper strips) as well as receive your first calligraphy seal in your new Goshuin book!

Starting from Namba Station (Midosuji Line, Exit 5, outside on street level) we will take a short walk to a local favourite organic cafe where you will receive a Japanese or Western-style breakfast. Following breakfast, at the cafe you will make your own Goshuin (original washi notebook) which are used to collect the calligraphy seals and stamps when visiting temples and shrines in Japan. After finishing making your Goshuin, we will take a short walk to a local secret shrine where you will learn about the history of shrines and temples in Japan, how to correctly pay your respects, collect an omikuji (Japanese fortune-telling paper strips) as well as receive your first calligraphy seal in your new Goshuin book!

The breakfast and workshop will take approximately 40 minutes to 1 hour, and will begin with choosing the handmade Yuzen paper with a unique design of your choice, before making your Goshuin-cho. When your book is made we will walk to a close-by favourite shrine. At the shrine, a priest will stamp the intricately carved seal of the shrine your book and then will inscribe the name, the date of your visit, and any additional prayers or symbols that the location is famous for - in traditional Japanese calligraphy. This is the ultimate souvenir from Japan, and a unique way to chronicle your journey!
