  • I was born in Nicaragua and I lived in Managua until the age of 9. All of my life, I heard about Selva Negra, but I never had the opportunity to visit. As an adult, my desire to visit Selva Negra increased, but the distance between Matagalpa and Managua always discouraged me. I was so fortunate to find this tour that would take you to the mountains of Matagalpa and back to Managua in a single day. The drive up to Matagalpa is long and sometimes, extremely slow as you make your way north on Carretera Norte, but the time and distance are worth the wait. Selva Negra, located in the mountains of Matagalpa is an absolute treasure. At Selva Negra, you will be able to visit a working coffee plantation and see how organic coffee is made. The coffee tour also includes a coffee tasting where you can sample different kinds of coffee from all over the world. I'm not a coffee drinker, but I still found the tour very interesting and informative. After the coffee tour, our tour guide Lionel took us hiking. There are many hiking trails surrounding the plantation. Some of the hiking trails are very easy, while others can be a bit tougher. While hiking, you can admire the full beauty of the mountains of Matagalpa, the trees, the birds, the monkeys. The plantation itself is extremely beautiful with a small lake in the center, and various cabins, and hotel rooms surrounding it. The plantation also includes a gazebo, a chapel and a banquet area for special occasions. The plantation also has a small restaurant. Although it's nothing fancy, the food is excellent. For breakfast, I had a typical Nica breakfast of fried eggs, gallo pinto, plaintains, and fresh cheese. For lunch, I had a delicious churrasco with rice, and steamed vegetables. The churrasco was well cooked, very tender, and flavorful. It was actually better than some of the churrascos I had in Managua. Overall, I highly recommend Selva Negra for anyone who is a coffee lover and is interested in eco-tourism. I also highly recommend Bossa Tours and his owner Lionel. He was an amazing guide and would definitely use his services again next time I visit Nicaragua.
