Even though the history is grim, we felt it was important to visit Port Arthur on our one day in Hobart. Our guide, Malcolm, picked us up at the cruise ship and off we went for a scenic and informational day. We learned a lot.

Port Arthur is a very historical part of Australian history about the early prisoners and young boys who were sent to Australia from the streets of London for committing petty crimes. Tour included a boat tour and guides who walk about the area giving the history of the place. Great day!

Well we couldn't have asked for a better time w/ our driver being so friendly and pointing out special things along our way to Port Arthur. He made sure all understood the importance and history of his city of Hobart which made it even more enjoyable. I really felt that we were not treated as tourist, but friends who came for a visit.

We went on this trip during our cruise on Holland America. Although the trip started out a bit disorganized as there seemed to be a problem locating a driver, it turned out well. Our driver was kind and accommodating. He went out of his way to make everyone happy. We loved seeing Port Arthur and learning about it's history! As an added bonus, we saw a Tasmanian Devil on the way back to Hobart which was a highlight! Would definitely recommend this excursion instead of taking one organized by the cruiseline. A major positive is being able to do it with a small group!

Renke, German guide was great and allowed us to move at our own pace and choose any extra things we might want to see if we had extra time.

Because of the weather, our ship was late. We called tour co.the night before and were told not to worry. We did not arrive on dock until 2:00 pm. Viatour people were there but our driver was not. He had taken another couple on short tour and didn't arrive for us until 3:00 pm. While we waited for him, the viatour rep told us not to worry as the prison etc would stay open until 7:30. This was not true! We did manage to make the last prison tour by 5:00 pm and enjoyed it. However, we missed out on the included cruise as the last cruise was for 4:20 pm. When we spoke to others on our ship, they had made the cruise because they left the port at 2:00 and did not have to wait 1 hour for their driver. As we only received one half of the paid tour, we believe that Viatour should be responsible for the balance.
