Overview

Hol Chan Marine Reserveis located off the southern tip of Ambergris Caye. Hol Chan Marine Reserve is doubtfully one of the most popular dive sites in the Caribbean, and indeed in Belize and has burgeoned into a unique refuge, with vigorous coral formations and a richness of marine life. The entire reserve focuses on a cut through the reef (called a quebrada) which is little more than 25 yards wide and 30 feet deep about 4 miles southeast of San Pedro. The tour will then head to the neighbouring Shark Ray Alley, where you will snorkel or dive and view ecstatic Nurse Sharks and Southern Sting Rays. When you arrive, you will see the surface often boiling with rolling sharks and stingray as they compete for the scraps. These creatures have a great tolerance for spectators.

We had an amazing time on this tour. It was a little slow going because we were waiting on people from the cruise ship and then they had to get everyone checked in, but we got to wait in the shade on the dock so it wasn't too bad. We started the tour with Stacy giving us information about Belize, the water, mangroves, etc. as we made our way to Caye Caulker. Once there we placed our food order and then made our way out to the reef. The guides, Stacy and Clayton, made sure everyone was good and Stacy did a fantastic job of pointing out the sea life and coral. She drew out a moray eel, found brittle starfish for us to hold ,and even found a conch we could look at. From there we moved on to the sharks and sting rays. Stacy and Clayton again made sure everyone was safe and could interact with the animals. The boat Captain Alex even showed people how to feed the birds that were above us. The sting rays and sharks were a very cool and memorable experience! We then went back to the caye for lunch before heading back. We stopped and fed some tarpin on our way which was cool as well. Captain Alex made for a very smooth ride and stopped to show us some dolphins on the way back. Would highly recommend this tour.

We booked an excursion through shoreexcursioneer.com and were taken via boat operated by splash wave tours. It was a little bit of a wait to get going because another party that booked the same tour was late to arrive. Once on the water and headed to the reef, everything was better than expected. The reef was amazing and the staff ( Stacey, Philip, and Felipe) were pleasant and helpful. Stacey was an excellent guide, doing a fabulous job of pointing out sea life. Pictures don't do it justice as you felt like you were in a Disney movie. It was a great day!

I chose this trip after a lot of research based on price. While I reserved the trip for 5 people months before the actual day , I went ahead and paid 5 weeks before to be sure confirmed and I could communicate with tour company. I called 4 days before and I emailed 2 days before and was told Marjorie would pick us up at 8:30. On the day of the trip, Marjorie the owner did not show up but the tour guide and 20 minutes late. We were told that they did not have the minimum and would cancel unless we paid an extra $163 for a private tour. This was my birthday and it was too late to change our plans but we noted they had plenty of time and opportunity to communicate - they said it was Viator’s fault as they asked them to communicate about minimums and don’t and they said they don’t get paid much by and gas was more expensive. All of this could have been told before the pickup. The poor guide being sent to do the dirty work. We paid so we could enjoy the day. We then probably had one of the best snorkel trips ever with Stacey as our guide; she was amazing.

Booked a trip through trip advisor, only to be told by the Tour Operator from Splash Wave Tours on San Pedro Belize, that I would have to pay an additional $212.00 because they did not have enough people for trip. Now it’s considered private. Well I get notified less than 24 hours, and your only given 24 hours to cancel. So you loose your refund. BE WARE THiS DOES NOT HAPPEN TO YOU.

Our tour guide, Stacy, was incredible. She was very knowledgeable on coral and fish species. The barrier reef snorkel had a large variety of fish. Snorkeling with the stingrays and nurse sharks was an unforgettable experience. I was able to dive down and pet them! The rum punch and lunch were very good. However, there really isn't a beach there. James did a great job as the boat captain.

Great experience, but they could have been better organized, a lot of time was wasted, less time snorkeling, more time waiting. We were led to walk from the ferry terminal to their pier, but there were no boats there, other people arrived after us that also had to wait for boats. We waited on that pier for about an hour, while they checked us in, gassed up the boats once they arrived, got everyone fins, and the snorkel masks that our driver almost forgot. Then we were told it was a 45 minute boat ride to were we were going to snorkel, but we had to make a stop to pick up the ladder. A man met us in a small canal and handed them the ladder. With 7 of us in a small boat, their dry storage compartments wouldn't even fit half of our stuff, it did on our tour in Roatan the previous day in a boat the same size. Then after about 20 minutes across the water, we stopped at a restaurant to pre-order lunch. Then another 20 minute boat ride, we finally got to the reef where we would snorkel. When we arrived, they had to get passes from the park officials, but they didn't know that they had changed to an online reservation system, and it seemed that we almost weren't going to be allowed to swim. They got on the phone and after some discussion, they paid the park officials cash, and we were given wrist bands. We saw a couple of turtles, and a huge barracuda, and some other interesting fish. There was a strong current and we were required to wear or drag a life vest which made it hard to swim dragging it behind you or to pass it off to a buddy to dive down. The fins that they provided were the worst I've every had. Kicking as hard as I could, I literally made no progress going forward or diving down. The only way to get back to the boat was to swim with my arms. Next we motored to another spot to swim with nurse sharks. That was a great experience, but again I was struggling with their equipment. They suggested we go without fins, and then my snorkel came off while I was trying to film the sharks with my GoPro. I tried to put it back on, but the clip was upside down. Next we motored back to the restaurant to have lunch. The whole fish and the seafood combo with lobster was great, but 2 of the girls ordered a cheeseburger and the burger was raw in the middle. Next we went to feed the tarpon, but we had to stop for gas. Once again, the experience with the tarpon was awesome. Then we motored, at Full Speed for about 30 minutes to get back to the pier, and walk to the terminal to catch the ferry back to the cruise ship. We actually arrived back to the terminal past the time we were supposed to be back onboard the ship, but luckily the ferry had been delayed. This was a great experience, but it could have been much better if they were more organized.

We did a semi-private tour to Hol Chan with James and Clayton from Splash Waves tour. What an amazing day we had! They picked us up at our island resort with a quick stop in Cay Caulker before we headed out to the reef. This was the most amazing snorkeling I've ever done. The water is pristine, the coral is healthy and colorful and the fish are everywhere! It's special to be able to snorkel in this protected area and Clayton was very informative. My only complaint is that I wanted to stay longer!

We reserved our snorkeling tour online. Our credit card was charged. We received confirming email. We held tickets in both printed and hard copy form. What could go wrong? We were never picked up at the agreed upon departure point. A Radisson-affiliated taxi driver made phone calls on our behalf. The first calls went to a perpetually busy number listed on our ticket information. This driver knew the owner of this tour company and successfully reached him at a different number The owner stated there was no reservation in his company’s system reflecting our paid tickets. So. If you’d like a review of the marine reserve I cannot offer you one. This trip to Belize was not my first. Anyone with travel experience here would generally agree that in Belize “things work.” In this case things didn’t work. My lesson learned is to contact the tour operator prior to the trip even while in possession of multiple layers of confirming artifacts that prove one holds paid-for tickets. Finally, the only reason I chose to offer this not-so-rosy review is that upon returning from an excellent Belizean cave kayak tour today I was greeted by a text message inviting me to offer a review of my experience yesterday at Hol Chan Marine Reserve with this operator. So that’s what I have done.

This was by far our favorite stop on our cruise!! Makes me want to live there! Captain Patrick, Jose and amazing Stacy made it that much better!! Lots of time on a boat and in the beautiful ocean! Most amazing snorkeling we've seen! Better than Cozumel and the others we've been on. Nurse sharks were amazing, Stacy wrestled one up and we got to touch it and see it up close. Saw sea turtles, lots of sting rays and beautiful coral and fish. Fed the Tarpons - what an experience! You do it and try not to scream!! Lol Our boat was covered and so comfortable with water available, fresh pineapple and of course, delicious rum punch!! Stopped for an amazing lunch by the beach. So well organized on serving lunch and was delicious. The only down side was the long wait to get on the boat having to wait for other people to come. I was so nervous since I can't swim and they stayed right with me with a life vest and made sure I got to see everything. By the end I was ready to be on my own looking around! Stacy is a class act and amazing. Thank you all for making it a special day. Belize is a beautiful, relaxed place. Stacy taught us a lot about her country, the language and so much more. The crew was excellent. The captain had a keen eye and spotted turtles, manatees and a crocodile for us. It felt like we got the VIP treatment. I couldn't have been happier!
