Tour Details

During your Huatulco vacation, take a break from the beach and enjoy a little outdoor adventure on a canyoneering tour. Canyoneering (also known as canyoning) is the sport of exploring canyons by climbing, rappelling and swimming, and you’ll do just that on this 5-hour excursion to the Zimatán River (Rio Zimatán). With a guide, explore the canyon carved by the river, doing as much or as little activity as you want, from swimming to jumping from the boulders to rappelling down by rope. All equipment is provided, and box lunch is included.

Know More about this tour

After pickup from your Huatulco hotel, head by minivan away from the coast to a canyon carved by the Zimatn River. Your guide will give you the rundown on how to best explore and experience the canyon; if youre a canyoneering or rappelling novice, youll receive instruction and safety tips.

Then, youre free to explore the canyon by swimming in natural pools, checking out waterfalls, jumping off rocks into the river, climbing up boulders, and rappelling (aka abseiling) down them into the water. If you need a rest (or simply don't want to jump off, climb up or rappel down anything!) stretch out on the rocks and enjoy the warm sunshine. You have about two hours to enjoy the river.

Take a break to eat a box lunch and sip on a refreshing beer (not included) or bottle of water, and then head back to your hotel by minivan.

  • I loved this adventure, but with that said - know what you are getting yourself in for. The guides were wonderful and very professional. My friend and I thought we would be floating down the River Zimatan in a boat or raft, well you do float the river on your back with a life jacket - but that definitely added to the whole adventure. We also jumped off the boulders to get into the River - my favorite. It is challenging, exciting, and worth going.

  • We were with Jackie on this adventure . Read Jackie's review . Her review is very accurate and true . I believed that there was some rock climbing involved and some water activity in the river . I wasn't prepared for the jumping off a rocks into the river cliff jumping . I don't swim very well heights don't bother me but combine that with water and it's a different story . I believed there would be some rappelling involved which I was really looking forward to . The rappelling didn't happen because of the low water levels. Maybe another time. I have done some rappelling before . I don't mind a bunch of physical activity and the experience of this excursion was very good . The guides were very good and were patient with especially me regarding the cliff jumping . I did feel at various times I held the group back but very thankful it was a small and understanding group . It is a great excursion and would recommend it to anyone who doesn't mind some physical activity and some excitement in your Huatulco vacation . Hope you are on the mend Jackie . Mort

  • This is a great excursion, but definitely not for the 'faint of heart'.
It's a very physically active 4-5 hour excursion, which includes lots of long hiking trails, climbing rocks, jumping off 20-30 foot rocks into the river, and floating the river. But you're not floating the river in a raft, you're floating the river in your life jackets. If you're not comfortable hiking, swimming, jumping off rocks and into a river, then this may not be the activity for you.

All this being said, we had a great time! The guides, Jose aka Che and Israel were great! Very nice, helpful and friendly. Poncho was our driver, and he was also very nice and accommodating.

We were there in January, which is the dry season, so the water levels in the river were a bit lower and the river was moving more smoothly, which worked out perfectly for us. A lot of the trails were covered in leafs, which can get a bit slippery when your shoes are wet, so made sure your shoes have some good tread on them.

If you decide to go on this excursion, you'll want to be in decent physical shape, make sure you wear good, closed toe water shoes and clothes that dry out quickly once they get wet. The description states that a box lunch is provided, but all we received was water and a granola bar. So you'll want to eat a good meal beforehand and/or pack yourself a few snacks.

Lastly, unfortunately 2 hours into the excursion, I did step into a hole on the hiking trail which was covered by leafs, and sprained my ankle. Because we were in the mountains, and far from any services i.e. cell phone service, transportation, etc, I had to continue walking to the end of the trip. Che and Israel were REALLY great about helping me. They made a stretcher to carry me over a difficult climbing section, held on to me and floated me down the river, helped me walk through the rocks by letting me lean on them and/or lifting me up as necessary. Though my accident was unfortunate, I was glad we went on this activity, and would do it again and do recommend it :
