Know More about this tour

The Colosseum is one of the most awe-inspiring monuments ever built, one of the wonders of the world. Exploring the Colosseum with an expert guide allows you to see this magnificent construction through the eyes of the gladiators. Youll hear captivating stories of bloody gladiatorial combat and spectacles involving wild animals, and even naval battles.

A walk through the Roman Forum gives a unique insight into the daily life of ordinary Romans, but also the political conflicts of Ancient Rome. Walking along the cobbled streets of the Forum, youll see some of the most important buildings in the city, including the Temple of Saturn, the Basilicas of Julia and Maxentius, and the House of the Vestal Virgins. Learning about Roman religion and politics and hearing stories of dramatic events, such as the decapitation of Cicero, in the places where they actually happened, will make your trip through the Forum an unforgettable experience.

The Palatine Hill was one of the most desirable neighborhoods in Ancient Rome, chosen by aristocracy and emperors for their luxurious villas. When you walk through the gardens of this shady hill and admire the stunning views of the Roman Forum below, youll understand why it was so sought after.

It was here that the city of Rome began, as Romulus and Remus were believed to have been found by the she-wolf on the slopes of the hill, and the emperors who built their sumptuous private residences on the Palatine Hill, took advantage of this legendary association. Youll explore the Flavian Palace, once inhabited by the emperor Domitian, and see the impressive remains of the Stadium of Domitian and the Baths of Septimius Severus.

Our groups tours have a maximum of 13 people, and you will have plenty of opportunities to talk to your guide (an archaeologist), and ask questions. In addition, all tickets are bought in advance, so you can skip the lines and spend more time exploring Ancient Rome, on your in-depth tour of the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine.

  • This tour is an absolute must! Tour guide was great at going into the details and answering questions.

  • Maria Libera Del Vecchio was an enthusiastic and knowledgeable historian whose energy was contagious! She made ancient Rome come alive for us, helping us imagine being a vendor in the Forum, a child running the streets, a senator in chambers, a nobleman on Palatine Hill, or a wash-woman in the river! She demonstrated the archeologic layers to be found so we started to see the older travertine vs. the later brick-style construction. She helped us visualize the missing buildings, hear the long-silenced commotion of market day, and smell the invisible stench of the swamplands from long ago. Maria knew the plant life of the area, and enriched our experience even more by helping us find edible herbs and discussing how olive oil is made. We were constantly on the move, stopping long enough for a story or for her to point out a sculpture that demonstrated the evolution of Christianity through pagan symbols or marks on a building where marble slabs had been removed and transported to St. Peters Basilica during construction in the 1500s. Answering questions in the Colosseum was second-nature for her, and learning that a private, royal lake had been drained and the Colosseum built on the site for the benefit of the community was a new bit of information for me, as was the fact of the extinction of a variety of African mammals from north Africa just so they could be slaughtered in a public spectacle. The details she shared with us truly made this tour worth every penny.

  • Our guide Maria was wonderful - exceptionally knowledgeable and fun too. She did a great job of answering questions and appealing to the needs of all in our group. Thank you for this excellent introduction to ancient Rome!

  • Our tour guide was fantastic, he had an amazing knowledge of everything and was attentive to the needs of the group, allocating enough opportunities to sit down amongst all the walking. One of my favourite tours in Europe, would highly recommend to anyone wanting to visit the Colosseum.

  • Our guide was absolutely amazing and behind knowledgeable. What I would change is the title as it is misleading. This was a 5.5 hour tour and 4 hours were spent at the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, 20 minutes or so for a lunch break and then a brief 30 minute tour of the Colosseum where we were turned loose to explore on our own. This tour is worth every penny, I just thought more time would be spent at the Colosseum, I think they should shorten the time at Palatine Hill.

  • excellent tour. worth every cent. great tour guide.

  • John Tinto was the best guide ever. Very knowledgeable and really made history come alive.

  • This was a fantastic tour at 5 hours and led by a qualified archaeologist who was knowledgeable and enthusiastic.

  • very good tour with excellent guide would recommend to anyone

  • Our guide on this tour was Vanessa. An archeologist by training, she brought the Forum and Coliseum to life with her descriptions and information. She had a number of illustrations showing what the buildings would have looked like and as you stood, looking at the remains, it made it so easy to understand how the buildings were used and how society worked. The tour was not rushed and we could have spent even longer in the Coliseum, as Vanessa left us to our own devices once she had explained all of its details, if the heat would have let us! Wonderful.
