Know More about this tour

Discover the beauty and history of Guatemala on this full-day historical tour of the Mayan ruins of Iximch and the colonial city of Antigua.

After pickup from your Guatemala city hotel, venture northwest approximately an hour to the dusty town of Tecpn, the location of the Mayan ruins of Iximch. With your knowledgeable guide, explore these ruins, which were once the site of the Kaqchiquel Maya capital. When you enter the site, you'll see four ceremonial plazas surrounded by tall temple structures and two ball courts. The plazas were used for things such as housing and special ceremonies, and the ball courts were used to play the Mesoamerican ballgame, a sport that dates back to 1400 BC. As you walk around, your guide will provide historical commentary.

Spend about two hours at Iximch, and then be driven to the city of Antigua, about an hour away. Have lunch at a local restaurant (own expense), and then visit the Central Plaza with your guide. Here, visit San Francisco Church, home to the shrine of Peter of St Joseph Betancur. Explore the ruins of the Santo Domingo Monastery, which was once the largest and wealthiest monastery in Antigua. And admire the arch of Santa Catalina, one of Antigua's most recognizable landmarks; built in the 17th century, the building connected to the arch was once home to Santa Catalina Convent.

Next, visit the beautiful and Baroque-style La Merced Church before entering the Museo del Jade (Jade Museum), where you can witness craftsmen making unique jewels out of stones and see an impressive jade collection. Youll then be taken back to Guatemala city.

Mirko was an excellent guide. His story telling of the sites we visited was excellent. His lunch recommendation was spot on and the food was delicious as he said. We enjoyed our day.

Our tour guide was Mirko he was so knowledgeable and friendly! He was our photographer, chofer and friend. We invited him to eat lunch with us! This gentleman was so kind that I would come back and ask for him again. Anything we asked he answered or gave us a solution. Wish Mirko the best!

Basilario, our guide was awesome! As it turned out we were the only ones on the tour. He was informative and we were very lucky to visit Iximche on the Mayan New Year’s and got to observe several ceremonies. Iximche us small compared to other Mayan sites but it was very peaceful and the drive out there was interesting.
Antigua was fine but crowded and we did a lot of walking from where the van was parked. The churches were interesting, stops to the Chocolate Museum and Jade Factory were okay but I would have enjoyed some time to shop.
Basilerio took us to a restaurant where the food was delicious. All in all a good but long day...

We were picked up fairly promptly by our guide at the hotel. The drice to Iximche took about 1 1/2 hours. It was up in green mountains on a ridge. There is a smal museum. The ruins have not been reconstructed. It was a very beautiful and interesting place. While there a groupshowed up. They had come to do a traditional ceremony at one of the altars. The priest had come from a village 8 hours away. Iximche translates to corn tree. It was another 1+ to Antigua. It is an old town with cobblestone streets and colonial architecture. There are many signs of the large earthquake that made the Spanish move the capitol to Guatemala City,
