Overview

Join us for a 3-hour walking tour through the former Jewish neighbourhood of Bucharest, to discover the history of Jews in Romania, their heritage, their temples and landmarks, as well as their most prominent intellectuals. The tour also includes the entry ticket to the Choral Temple, the most beautiful synagogue in Romania that has been recently restored.

Know More about this tour

Bucharest never had a true Jewish district, nor a ghetto where they were forced to live during the Holocaust. However, Jews have been settling in the city since early 16th century, mainly around the princely court and the main commercial routes of the city. Today, the areas where most Jewish families were concentrated are mostly forgotten and abandoned, although they are very close to Bucharests commercial center. However, their development potential is enormous and their history is very rich.

The Jewish Trail includes:
  • The lively streets once inhabited by Ashkenazi Jews
  • Abandoned & restored synagogues
  • The astonishing Choral Temple
  • The former Sephardic neighborhood
  • Jews during the Romanian Holocaust
  • The birth of the Yiddish theater in Romania
  • The emigration of Jews during the Communist regime
  • The demolition of the Jewish architectural heritage during the Communist regime
  • Famous Romanian Jews and their legacy

Your representative, Claudia, was outstanding. Knowledgeable, patient with questions, did not rush at any point. A superb tour.

Marius was our guide and he was very well informed. We had a small group so it was an intimate experience. It was very sad to see how rundown the areas we visited were. It would have been nice to be forwarned about the conditions that we would encounter that day.

The tour showed you streets and houses in Bucharest that you probably never would have noticed otherwise. Very interesting to see examples of buildings by jewish architechts and the link to the city's history.

Mario was a really good guide. he showed us all aspects of the Jewish past in Bucharest. We had a wonderful morning walking around all the sites and seeing old neighborhoods that used to have a vibrant active Jewish life.
Mario also introduced us to great coffee shop where we rested and tasted the best coffee in Bucharest. We went back to that shop every day of our stay in Bucharest.

To say I enjoyed this walking tour would be an understatement. Marius was refreshingly honest and impressively knowledgeable about the history of Jewish life in Bucharest. He covered places of interest I would struggle to discover on my own and was happy to accommodate me as a solo traveler.
