Know More about this tour

Your day will begin with a pickup from your hotel. From here you will be taken to the airport base where you will obtain your equipment and participate in a safety briefing as well as quick training. After this you'll proceed to Kaituna River.

You can't get more thrills and action than on a grade 5 rapid. Fast and furious, you'll ride through foamy water over the seven meter drop waterfall!

Most of the trip runs through a very narrow gorge with sheer rock walls clad in ferns and other native plants providing a truly stunning backdrop to this exciting tour.

Although this trip provides full on action the pool drop nature of the river means it is not technically difficult so the trip is suitable for adventurous beginners. In fact around 70% of customers have never rafted before.

Around 15 - 20 minutes of training is provided prior to the trip teaching all the required paddle commands and safety information.

Situated in the Okere falls Scenic Reserve the river is pool drop, meaning that every rapid is followed by calm water making it very forgiving for a grade 5 river.

You'll be provided with:

  • Safety Helmets
  • Lifejackets
  • Wetsuits
  • Polar Fleece Tops (weather dependent)
  • Spray jackets (weather dependent)
  • Wetsuit Booties

The waterfalls were cool and made it special. The guides on the other hand were so far the least favorites we had and we did a lot of activities (Blackwater rafting, canopy tours and more). There wasn't a nice flow as we stopped quite often. I paddled by mistake as I misunderstood the instructions. It wasn't end of the world. Becca felt too comfortable to give me a "strong" pat on my vest. Lucky for her my self defense reflexes didn't kick in. Don't ever touch your customer like that! 2 of the guides were pretty approachable otherwise the rest we had just unpleasant impression of. Only thing worthy was the nature and not the company. Not our first rafting experience so 3/5.

OMG! What an experience! I’ll admit the waterfall scared me! I thought by letting Nev know my fears he would put me at ease……. I guess in a round about way of joking about it he kind of did! We met at the hanger and were kitted out with everything we needed and Dave drove us down to the river whilst Nev gave us the safety talk. There was only our family (2 adults, 2 teens) on board! We had a great time in the first few rapids with photos being taken along the sidelines. Then came THE waterfall rapid. All I could do was repeat the instructions, hang on, ball, swim left. Hang on, ball, swim left. But we survived and it was awesome! The photos that were taken were unbelievable, I didn’t realise how much we disappeared until we saw them! Again more fun in rapids until we were told to get out and swim the next one (optional!) We all did it and survived! Nev made sure we had a lot of fun and made sure to to extra stuff (standing up rapids, going back into rapids etc) at all the photo points. The photos were exceptional! I think over 80 taken and we bought the package, only $50 extra, but well worth it to see our facial expressions! Highly recommend going with these guys!

Our family of three will remember this tour as one of the highlights of our visit to New Zealand! Our guide, Cam, was great! The Kaituna River packs in fast water, big rapids and even bigger falls, plus gorgeous high rock, fern covered gorges. They have quality equipment and a great home base to prepare for the river run. Make the time to do this, you’ll be very happy.

Great time on the Kaituna! Had a small group on my day which I honestly appreciated. They are very good at keeping you prepared and safe. It is a slightly shorter raft -- about one hour on the river -- but you very much get your money's worth. Would highly recommend, especially if they had a combo option that was a little longer :)

A really fun trip down a beautiful river! Justin and his team made us feel super safe in an activity that is a little out of our comfort zone. We had a lot of laughs! It was great to learn more about Rotorua on our drive, and he incorporated a lot of Maori culture into the raft journey which was cool and unique. Thank you river Rats for making our journey so memorable! Thank you for the yarns, the laughs and the adventure. highly recommend.

Heaps of fun! Recommend to do this activity for the pure sense of real, raw nature that you cannot get staring at a screen! Kids loved it - unforgettable. The guides added an extra dimension with the local knowledge of the river and surrounding features.
