Overview

Discover the impressive Karlstejn Castle on a guided half-day coach tour from Prague. Built in the 14th century by Charles IV, the Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia, the Gothic-style castle housed treasures of the Holy Roman Empire, including the Czech coronation jewels.

Know More about this tour

On this half-day trip from Prague, you'll enjoy a guided tour of the Gothic- and Renaissance-style Karlstejn Castle, built in 1348. As you explore, notice the attention to detail imposed by Charles IV, who was devoted to the rich interior decoration of his castle.

During the castle tour, you will move through the wildly impressive, step-like formation of the individual towers and buildings that make up the castle as a whole. At the lowest point lies the Well tower and Burgrave's palace; from there youll walk up toward the majestic Imperial palace, made up of five floors. Then continue even further toward the Marian tower. Finally, you will discover the monumental 197-foot (60-meter) Great tower, located at the highest point of the castle.

The castles interior is still decorated with a unique array of wall paintings that date back to the 14th century. In the Chapel of the Holy Cross youll find a collection of 129 Master Theodoric panel paintings, the largest collection of its kind in the world. Another large gallery contains portraits of Czech rulers and a replica of the Crown of St Wenceslas, the coronation crown of the Holy Roman Emperor.

In winter, if the Karlstejn Castle is closed, an alternative visit to the esk ternberk Castle will be arranged. esk ternberk is an imposing castle and is considered one of the best-preserved Gothic-style Bohemian castles of the mid-13th century. The castle stands at the top of a steep granite cliff on the western bank of the Szava River in the market town of esk ternberk. This castle features rich stucco decorations and a unique collection of weapons.

The tour was literally just for transportation. After dropping us off at the castle, the castle provides options for 3 tours, but we only have time to take 1 which was 1 hour long. After the 1 hour tour there was no time to even walk around and we were sent back on the bus

Overall great trip and guide. My only "complaint" is that we weren't able to see the medieval family chapel, as it is only available to small(er) private tours. It looks like an amazing part of the castle, and it was irritating that we couldn't see it while we were there. I understand the reasons why the castle staff don't want huge numbers traipsing through the chapel. But my request is that Viator offer this as a private, or smaller tour, so that one has the option/opportunity to see such a special part of the site.

Very good guide, but unlike what is written in the TripAdvistor description, the trip does NOT include the visit of the chapel of the holy cross (it includes tour 1, not tour 2). The visit of the chapel of the holy cross is reserved to 3 groupes of 16 people every day. Our guide managed to book us this second tour, but we had to pay it ourselves in addition to the trip cost.

Null tips!

Nice overall tour. Bus ride was comfortable and not too long. Guide was very good. Nice castle and small town/shopping on the walk up to the castle. Walk was up hill but not too steep and made for an easy walk up to the castle.
