My husband and I did two days of touring with Lijo. We did the Jewish Heritage Tour of Cochin and the following day took the houseboat tour. Both days were wonderful. The houseboat was a slow relaxing ride on the canals. We saw a few spectacular birds along the way. Numerous women were doing laundry in the river by hand. Their life was explained so we felt familiar with their experiences. I will try to write up the Jewish tour separately as it deserves it’s own story. Anything I could have asked of Lijo, he would have helped with. His car was very comfortable with air conditioning. I highly recommend any tour Lijo offers.

Lijo Jose of Muziris helped us tailor a backwater cruise that included an exploration of smaller channels. Our driver, Romi, did an excellent job of getting us to all the right places and Raju, our captain, made the trip a total pleasure. Afterward, we had a lovely lunch at Marari Beach resort, capping a perfect day’s outing.

Fascinating excursion on the Manimala and Pamba rivers, and Vembanad Lake in the state of Kerala near Kochi. This was our 4th and final day in India and our guide Raj imparted far more information about the country, its people, culture, economy and other interesting background than we had gotten the 3 previous days combined. The backwater houseboat adventure opened our eyes to the lives of those living and earning a living along the river, including rice farmers and fishermen. Very tranquil and enjoyable. The ride in the van was comfortable enough but took a long time (nearly 2 hours) to drive to the boat in morning rush-hour traffic… Still worth it…. Jew town has an interesting history and is a quaint area with mostly pedestrian traffic but shopkeepers are just as annoying as they are elsewhere in India. Could have done without…

Highly recommended. If you would like to spend 2-3 hours exploring the backwaters, then you will enjoy this trip. Lijo was a friendly, charming and attentive host, and when it wasn’t possible to eat lunch on the boat, he arranged an even better alternative nearby. Best meal we’ve had in India in a beautiful location. Would have been quite happy just driving around with him all day!

I recommend this tour and am pleased that I booked it. Hotel pickup in Kochi was prompt and transportation to Alappuzha was comfortable and safe. The boat tour was peaceful and quiet, a nice and relaxing change after a busy work week in Mumbai. Lunch at a local backwater cafe was special - interesting and delicious. This was a very enjoyable tour, a great way to see and experience life in the backwaters of Kerala.

We used this company in both Mangalore and Goa. In both ports we were greeted by Lijo, personally, who,out us in the hands of very capable and friendly guides. Our vehicle was comfortable. The guide was very informative. Our ride on the houseboat was terrific. We also saw the Fort Cochin area as well as the Chinese fishing nets. You will be very pleased with the service provided by Lijo Jose and his company.

We would give Lijo a 5++ This was our second tour with Lijo, completely different from the first and a great success again. He seems to know every bird, flower, plant, animal, about navigational currents. He is sensitive to client needs, ensuring that dietary restrictions were considered. He offered a short trip to a site along the route which was interesting and offered a change. He pointed out activities along the shore. He is passionate about his work. Great guide!

If you are on a cruise ship that sails into Kerala then book your tour with this company. We sailed with Celebrity and booked Lijo Jose of Muziris Heritage for all of our tours in Mumbai, Goa and Kerala. So what sets them apart...the most important thing is Lijo himself. He listens to everything you may want to see and does his best to ensure you are not disappointed. We first docked in Mumbai for two days and did two totally day tours.. he was their to meet us off the ship and they to wave us off...but what we didn't expect was when, as we disembarked in Goa, he would be there to greet us again...and wave us off and then appear again in Kerala ... it was amazing customer service. We made friends on the cruise who hadn't booked any tours. I messaged Lijo and he got them on our tours (some only a group of 8 and the most 20).. they worked out that they saved over £300 by using Lijo instead of the ship... which is pretty amazing. The backwater cruise in a house boat was extremely special. We all loved it... I would 100% recommend Muziris Tours and Lijo Jose for all your Indian tour needs...

its a 90 minutes bus journey to the point of departure for the houseboats but once there it was an interesting and relaxing journey offering a decent glimpse of the way of life for the villagers around the lake. There was a little time to explore a few things in Cochin before heading back to the ship. Ideally there would be time to explore the town and its perhaps necessary to choose either the backwaters cruise or go for a full blown 'city' tour
