Know More about this tour

As you drive along the Kona coastline, you can often see splashing spinner dolphins or in the winter months and breaching humpback whales. Pass through the quaint plantation towns of Hawi and Kapaau, site of the life-size statue of King Kamehameha I.

At the end of the road, a brief rest stop at the historic Kohala Mule Station offers one of Hawaii's most spectacular coastal views. Then the real fun begins with a bumpy but short off-road drive in the 6x6 Pinzgauer. Ramble through a landscape of rushing streams, towering ocean cliffs and cascading waterfalls!

Once out of the Pinzgauer, you'll step back into the early 1900s when plantation owners began construction of the Kohala Ditch Trail. Along the 1.5 mile (2.4km) loop trail, you'll see tunnels blasted and carved from solid rock, walk over an aqueduct and learn the story of the tremendous effort it took to build the 22 mile (35km) irrigation system. The hike is considered easy to moderate with several short, steep climbs. The total walking distance is up to 2 miles (3.2km).

Seven beautiful waterfalls grace the trail and you can take a refreshing dip in the last pool visited and play under a refreshing cascade. With stunning mountain panoramas, green valleys and the abundant water, the Kohala Waterfalls Adventure is a fascinating way for young and old to experience Kohala's "story of water."

Garry made this tour awesome. It was not a long hike, but a little bit challenging for some, in places! But the places he took us and the views were phenomenal! The swim was refreshing and fun!

The tour was amazing! The tour operator knew how to provide a safe and exciting hike. We saw many waterfalls, ate ginger flowers :) yes edible flowers and saw many different plants, trees and fields of guava :) which we got to pick and, but lunch was the highlight! We had lunch on a small area over looking the entire Waipao Valley!!! IT WAS STUNNING!! THE BEST HIKING EXPERIENCE WE'VE EVER HAD!!!!!!! Amazing!!!!!!

This tour of the waterfalls was fantastic! The falls were so beautiful. You see several of them, all on private property so they can't be seen otherwise. The hike was relatively easy and Mike (our guide) made sure that everyone was caught up before continuing. There were frequent stops often enough. The falls we swam under was really fun and very refreshing on a hot day. Mike was very knowledgeable and helped make the trip very pleasant. The last stop of the day gave you a very special view of Pololu valley. I would do this tour again just for that view!

Overall I liked our hike, it was easy about a mile round trip, and the fresh water pool was fun. Our guide Mark was very knowledgeable. He was able to answer all the groups questions.

This was one of the best experiences we’ve ever had, and our guide Nick was absolutely amazing! Super educational and gorgeous scenes. Great people and great memories :)

The waterfall tour was excellent. A friend and I took our four girls on this adventure, and we had a terrific time. The hike was easy and enjoyable, and there was plenty of time to take a dip at the base of a couple waterfalls. The guide Rob was very knowledgeable about the island and provided us with a great education about the private property upon which the tour was held and the Big Island more broadly. He provided all the gear and snacks you could ever want or need. We finished the day at a stunning overlook for a picnic lunch. Both moms and kids enjoyed the afternoon immensely!

Our guide Nick was super knowledgeable and made the tour tons of fun! My parents were able to handle the hike (very easy) and my kids (youngest 7 yo) did it no problem. The best part was being able to swim in the waterfalls at the end of the hike. Worth it to try it!

We are a family of 6, ages 32-66, that went on a private Kohala Waterfalls Adventure tour. Mark was our excellent, caring, and very knowledgeable guide. He made our experience very special and memorable! We enjoyed the hikes, wading under the waterfalls and the breathtaking panoramic view for our picnic lunch. We truly enjoyed Mark’s vast knowledge of the area and his willingness to share the history, wildlife, birds, plants and the fragile ecosystem. The van was very comfortable and well equipped. Hawaiian Forest and Trails provided complimentary use of backpacks, raincoats, water bottles, and walking sticks. Thank you Mark, for making our waterfall adventure exceptional! Note: I advise bringing water shoes in your daypack. Makes it easier to walk in the waterfall areas with all the rocks and pebbles.
