Overview

Step off your cruise and step back in time on this tour of historic Kona. On this cruise ship excursion, we share Kailua-Konas history to set the stage for your trip back in time to Puuhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park an ancient Hawaiian village of refuge for kapu (law) breakers.

We show you a beautiful scenic view overlooking Kealakekua Bay an underwater preserve and where a monument to Captain Cook stands. Here, he sailed in and was received as the god, Lono, yet he proved to be a mere mortal and was slain. Visit the Painted Church the tiny church Belgian priests painted to be a grand cathedral. Experience history as rich as the brew at the Kona coffee factory we visit as well.

Highlights

  • Free port pickup and drop-off included
  • Informative, friendly and professional guide
  • Great overview and orientation of the city

Know More about this tour

The Big Island isnt only breathtaking scenery and beaches it also has a history and culture just waiting to be explored on a shore excursion. On this historical and cultural tour of Kona, youll take a step back in time to Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park, which translates to Place of Refuge at Honaunau. In ancient Hawaii, residents who broke Hawaiis system of kapu (law) would receive death as punishment. The only option for survival would be to escape to the nearest puuhonua, or place of refuge.

Today, you can experience the peace of Puuhonua o Honoaunau National Historical Park, where ancient temples and kii (carved wooden images) hint at stories from the past. Stroll around this palm-covered sanctuary and enjoy the view of Honaunau Bay.

Continue your historical journey to St. Benedicts Painted Church, where Belgian-born Father Velghes three-dimensional paintings depict heroes from the Bible. This artwork served as an important teaching tool in a time when many people couldnt read and write. Father Velghe painted this church in 1842, and this parish continues the work Father Velghe began more than a century ago.

Finish your shore excursion at the Royal Kona Coffee Visitor Center, where youll see how coffee cherries are processed into delicious Royal Kona coffee. Enjoy the view of Kealakekua Bay in the distance and savor a sample of Kona coffee.

The guide spoke in a monotone the entire time....could hardly understand what he was saying. Just sort of dropped off at spots and figure it out on your own. You need to add the amount of time just riding in the bus to get to one place to the other.

This tour was okay, but it was not my favorite. We got to see some nice things including Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park. There were spiders EVERYWHERE. However, although terrifying, they did make a great subject for a few photos. The location was highly crowded, but it was definitely beautiful. We also got to stop and sample coffee at Royal Kona Coffee, which was good, but also very crowded! However, they had tons of different coffees you could sample for free! Really delicious! I would do the tour again, it was just not the highlight of our trip. If you have additional time in Kona, I highly recommend the Kona Brewing Company as well.

This is a good tour, that let's you see some parts of Kona you might not get to. Problem is that it is too short. You could use more time at most stops . Tours drivers are good, though and add a lot to the sights you are seeing through their knowledge of history of the island.
