Know More about this tour

Start your day tour with pickup from Kona and Kohala hotels, and then head to Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park, where you'll follow your guide on a short hike along a nature trail to sacred Hawaiian temples and ancient petroglyphs left by the areas original inhabitants. At the end of trail, come upon Honokohau Beach, abundant with local wildlife like green sea turtles, native birds and perhaps even a Hawaiian monk seal one of only two mammals native to the Hawaiian Islands.

Hop back in the minivan for the drive through downtown Kona, where you can glimpse historical landmarks such as Hulihee Palace and Mokuaikaua Church, the oldest Christian church in the Hawaiian Islands. En route to South Kona, admire the unveiling of the Big Islands jagged coastline. A scenic road takes you to Kealakekua Bay, where Captain James Cook landed in 1778 during a festival dedicated to Lono, the fertility god.

Make your next stop at Big Island Bees, a farm that has produced raw and organic honey since 1972. Join the beekeeper for a lively, educational exploration of bees, beekeeping and honey that includes an open beehive demonstration that you'll watch from a safe, screened viewing area. Sample raw, single-flower, organic honey while you check out the museums tools, photographs and displays to learn about the history of beekeeping and honey production.

After catching another look at pristine Kealakekua Bay, follow your guide on a narrated walking tour through Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park. Explore the ancient royal grounds, and learn about the sanctuary of Puuhonua, a place of refuge for Hawaiians who broke sacred laws called kapu.

Finally, experience one of the Big Island's absolute must-dos a tour of a Kona coffee farm. Discover thriving coffee orchards, and learn about the meticulous harvesting process from local coffee farmers. Then explore the coffee mills to see how the beans are processed, and sip a freshly brewed cup to experience the rich aroma and flavorful taste that distinguish Kona coffee from other varieties. Finish your tour with lunch at the coffee farm before youre dropped off at your hotel in the afternoon.

  • Our tour experience was spectacular, especially because of our tour guide Kai. He provided so much extra information about the Big Island and historical events that it made the tour come alive. We enjoyed the places we visited, but the tour commentary is what made the trip complete. It was also really great that we almost had a personal tour because there were only four of us in the van. By the way, did I happen to mention that Kai was great!

  • Kind of mixed on this one, some stops were good some were just ok.

Kaloka-Honokohau park and Puuhonua o Honaunau were educational and interesting.

The bee farm was more there for tourists than an actual bee farm. The part we saw was little more than a gift shop and a few hives setup for demonstration. Presumably there was a much larger real operation somewhere else.

The coffee farm was a good mix of actual groves and production. The tour was run by one of the employees there and good.

Our tour guide was excellent at presenting content both on the van and with us at each stop.

This wasn't great, but just ok. It's a bit pricy for what you see.

  • Very good tour - a lot depends on the weather- since part of the tour gets close to Hilo where it almost always rains everyday.

  • Our guide for the day, Kala, was very informative. The tour is long, with lots of stops. Wear good walking shoes! We did the tour on the next to last day of our visit and we were worn out due to the length. Maybe best to do this tour early in your trip.

  • Nick was our guide/driver who was very personable and knowledgeable. Enjoyed the National Park - Royal Grounds most of all - lot of history and Nick was certainly able to explain it. Saw turtles sunning on the beach as well. Thanks Nick for a great day and the lunch!

  • Guide was very knowledgeable, nice, caring, polite. Enjoyed it a lot.

  • Trip was excellent--docent was very knowledgeable about all we saw. Went out of his way to provide for wants/wishes of those on trip.

  • This was one of my favorite activities

  • This tour was amazing!
