Overview
The mine, built in the 13th century, produced table salt continuously until 2007, as one of the world's oldest salt mines still in operation.
The mine's attractions include dozens of statues, three chapels and an entire cathedral that has been carved out of the rock salt by the miners.
The Wieliczka mine is often referred to as "the Underground Salt Cathedral of Poland."
In 1978 it was placed on the original UNESCO list of the World Heritage Sites.Today, the Wieliczka salt mine combines many centuries of tradition and modernity, the history of several hundred years and an underground metropolis with extensive infrastructure.

I’m 75 and I worried about the steps to the salt mine. I was told if I asked I might be able to ride the elevator. Unfortunately it was under renovations when I arrived. Not to worry the steps are an easy way to get down. They are wide and in short flights. I enjoyed the guide and the mines! It was a great experience

Krakow Salt Mine Guided Tour -1!00 polish zloty ( £20 ) entrance with a British guide tour. Parking nearby for £5 all day. ( see town afterwards or pay £1 an hour elsewhere. Not to busy upon arrival. Our guide was not very clearly spoken . Many many steps down, so comfy footwear needed. Small stop halfway through tour where there were toilets , gift shop and snack bar. Many salt carvings to see along the way along with the stunning large chapel. Thankfully afterwards a lift to take you up. An interesting experience.

Tappa obbligata

The Krakow Salt Mine tour is a great way to spend a half day in the area. Seeing the very earliest (1500's) work and working conditions of the miners and the amazing works of art makes for a fascinating experience. Many of the sculptures were done by miners after a full day of mining. The guides are excellent. Everything you see, including the chandeliers, are made of salt.

Incredible to see. The cathedral was breathtaking. Definitely a must see. 350 steps down and lots of walking.

Excellent tour. A lot of walking. Wear comfortable clothes and foot wear. Travel light. No heavy bags etc. Guide knew his stuff but hurried us along. Microphone was bad in places. Overall well worth a visit. Packed with history and workmanship was unique and amazing.
