Know More about this tour

Discover the magnificence of Guatemalas Lago de Atitln (Lake Atitlan) on this relaxing sightseeing cruise! Depart from your hotel in Guatemala city and spend time on the water with your expert local guide, enjoying the lake's gorgeous volcanic surroundings!

From Guatemala city, venture northwest to the town of Panajachel, located on Lago de Atitlns northeastern shore. Board your boat and head out on the water, marveling at the beautiful landscape. Lago de Atitln originated from a massive eruption of Los Chocoyos volcano. Thousands of years later, smaller volcanoes rose out of the lake's waters, forming the lakes spectacular setting. The three volcanoes Volcan San Pedro, Volcan Atitlan and Volcan Toliman all soar above 9,000 feet (3,000 meters) and create a dramatic vista that adds to the lakes natural beauty.

Cruise across the lake to Santiago de Atitlan, a colorful lakeside village. Go ashore here to see the village and observe how the local Tzutujil Maya people live. Walk down the main street lined with shops selling everything from oil paintings to woven baskets, and then re-board your boat for the cruise back to Panajachel.

When you reach Panajachel, spend some time in town exploring Santander Street, the towns main strip, filled with shops, craft stands and restaurants. Enjoy a delicious lunch at a nearby restaurant (own expense) and browse through the various shops and craft stalls before being transported back to your Guatemala city hotel.

Bring a neck pillow and seat cushion - ride is long and bumpy and depending on the traffic, getting back to Guatemala City can take as much as 5 hrs!

If you travel to Guatemala and are traveling with limited mobility like using a wheelchair, never book any trip with Guatemalan Adventure. In October, 2022 we and ten of our friends were on a cruise that stopped for a day in Guatemala. One of our party has limited use of her legs and uses a wheelchair. She can only walk with assistance. Trying to pre-plan a day adventure for our group, we contracted with Guatemalan Adventure for a trip to Lake Atitlan which included a boat ride to a village where we would have lunch and visit another village. We told them about the need for an accessible van and accessible boat entry and exit. They said they could accommodate us and we booked the trip. The trip was a disaster. The van was not accessible in any way. We helped Sheila on board and the wheelchair was folded down and placed in the walkway. If any need for a fast exit was required, the wheelchair completely blocked the exit. When we finally arrived at the lake, there was no way we could transport her to the boat or load her onto the boat. We were in port for about nine hours. The ride to the lake took close to three hours. The ride back would be the same. The boat was advertised as 1/2 hour each way. This would leave us with two hours to visit two villages and have lunch. We were going to miss the boat if we continued. We told the tour guide that the boat access would not work and that we would not return to our ship in time. We told them to pick another place for lunch and return us back to the ship. They complied and even with the shortened schedule we still returned early evening. They should have not sold us this trip! With no accessibility accommodations this trip was a $1,200 lunch ride with no access to community or local flavor. IF we went by their time line between the ride and boat that was six hours. That left three hours for lunch and the two village visits. There was no time for contingencies like traffic, mechanical or weather issues. And yes, weather was an issue in that one lane of the highway was washed out. If we had stayed any longer, it is unknown if the other side of the highway would be accessible. When the company was contacted they were not helpful. They suggested that we could have left Sheila at the dock and "The rest of the group could have taken the boat ride but they decided not to." They were right. We were not going to leave one of our group at a small untended boat dock while the rest of us proceeded with a boat ride, two village tours and lunch. This tour company should be sanctioned for what they did and if nothing else should never agree to take on people with limited abilities. What we learned from this experience: 1) Never to use Guatemalan Adventure. 2) Never book an excursion that takes you more than one hour from your ship.

We are really happy for our trip, specially to MR Gustavo our driver and guide to Lake Atitlan, thank you, is not easy to drive 110 mile in one day is exhausting, but that something if you are a driver would understand and appreciate, beside that he is detail oriented to find you out what hotel is he picking you up even do you change your hotel last minute MR Gustavo would do the best to make you feel like home and give you the best service. I appreciate that he speaks 4 languages that’s amazing to have a guide like MR Gustavo is important to have always some one with that level of education to show you their country and sightseeing.

The pick up was at 6:30 am, our driver and tour guide Mirko was very accommodating. The drive was 3 hours, but the view of Lake Atitlan was so worth it. The highlight of thr trip was the village of San Juan La Laguna, very colorful and lots of history. Raining very hard on the drive back but Mirko was very careful. He also gave us some time to shop at the main street market.
