Know More about this tour

Depart from your central Reykjavik pick up point by an air-conditioned minivan and travel to a typical Icelandic lava cave.

En route, listen as your certified guide describes how the lava tube was formed in an eruption, when lava solidified above the ground while magma flowed and moved beneath it, eventually forming twisted corridors and chambers.

On arrival at the plateau, put on your provided specialist caving equipment, including a helmet with a flashlight. Then, after a safety briefing, follow your guide into the cave.

With your way illuminated by your helmet torch, head through the tunnel behind your guide. Be prepared to crawl over uneven terrain along some sections as you progress.

While you explore, soak in the silent and eerie beauty around you — nature at its rawest. See the beginnings of new stalactites and stalagmites, and ogle the multicolored lava formations and streams evident in the walls and ceiling as your guide explains how the different types of lava indicate different eruptions through the ages.

After discovering the cave, emerge back into the daylight and change out of your caving gear. Then, relax on your minivan journey back to Reykjavik, where your trip ends.

  • Very nice guide and was well informed

  • We thoroughly enjoyed this tour, it was not something we experienced before. We knew we have to go through some narrow area but when we actually started to walk in the lava cave, we got the real taste of the caving and crawling experience in a pitch dark place. It was really thrilling and exhilarating as we walked, crawled up and down the lava tube. Our guide Paulina from Extreme Adventures was super nice and knowledgeable and really made this tour a fun ride. Not recommended for people with back and joint problems.

  • This was a great experience. Our guide was great, knowledgeable, and just gave you a great sense of confidence. Underground was amazing, but you spend a fair amount of time stooped, and a couple of times you're flat to the ground. I'm over 50, 5'10 and not great with confined spaces but I had no issues whatsoever with this adventure.

  • Our family of 5 enjoyed learning about the formation of this cave and walking through it. Most of the walk required only minor crouching. Towards the end, you had a choice of 2 ways to go- the way u came in, or a 2nd way that required getting on your stomach for a few spots. We enjoyed that option.

  • Fantastic experience! Was raining a bit but it was fine. Very knowledgeable guide!

  • Morris was fantastic! What a great tour. It does require some crawling and tight spaces, a fantastic way to see the lava field.

  • Such an amazing experience. Tour guide was very knowledgeable and created a very fun atmosphere for us while exploring the lava cave.

  • This tour was a walk inside of a lava cave. It was informative but not something I personally would do again. If you are interested in geology you would likely find a lot more satisfaction in this tour.

  • This was a unique experience, and a real highlight of my trip to Iceland. Being underground in these beautiful caves was unforgettable. The guides were friendly, informative, and helpful. If you don't like confined spaces or crouching, this probably isn't for you, though.

  • What an amazing experience! After a few days of full-day tours Golden Circle, South Coast, we decided to sleep in and to spend our afternoon lava caving with Arctic Adventures. Our tour guide, Palmí was incredibly nice, informative, and funny, and made the 30-40 minute trip from Reykjavík to the Leiðarendi cave a fun time. The caving itself was a very unique experience. Palmí knew a lot about the geological history of Iceland and the formation of the Leiðarendi cave. The caving itself doesn't require a lot of physical exertion. There isn't a lot of climbing, ascending, or descending. You basically descend for a very short time on a slight decline and then walk more or less the rest of the way, until the end where you ascend at a steeper incline that requires using a rope for 3 to 4 steps. We went in March so there was still snow on the ground where Palmí was able to kick steps in--not sure how footing works in the summer. While it is not physically exhausting, the caving does require that you be agile: If you have knee, ankle, or other joint issues, I wouldn't recommend it. Also, very tall, broad, or overweight people may find it difficult to maneuver or manage certain areas because there is crawling and squeezing in tight spaces required. I'm about 5'11, average weight, with normal-to-slight shoulders. I had no problem besides carelessly bumping my head a few times--not to worry, you wear a helmet and it works! With those warnings aside, this was a lot of fun and a great way to spend an afternoon. Highly recommended!
