Know More about this tour

Beginning with a noon pickup from your Playa del Carmen hotel, or meeting point, the tour will head to the Chichen Itza archaeological zone. After you arrive you'll be treated to a large buffet of exquisite Mayan dishes so you can feel as a real Mayan. Afterward, take a guided tour of the site and have free time to snap some amazing photos.

At Chichen Itza, discover how this large pre-Columbian city played an important role in the Mayan civilization from 600 AD to 1200, and remained a center of worship and pilgrimage until the arrival of the Spaniards. Even today, it is still considered sacred by the Mayan people of the Yucatan. Like many of the cities of ancient Mexico, the site was abandoned, and its ruins were hidden by the jungle for many years.

Later in the evening youll enjoy the innovative light and sound show, 'Nights of Kukulcan', which lights up the pyramid itself. This beautiful show, armed with the latest technology, and based on 3-D mapping projections with music and images, will recreate the fascinating pre-Colombian history of the city.

  • So yesterday Flo, Stuart and Eva went on a tour of Chitchen Itza
We booked the tour that included the evening light show.
Our tour started with a short walk to a nearby hotel where we met the coach, we were greeted warmly by Rodrigo our tour guide. We'd read a review about this tour that was a little concerning as it said that the vehicle that they travelled in was small and cramped with no aircon so we were pleased to find ourselves on a new luxury airconditioned coach.
We were the last pick up so we were soon on our way!
The journey from playa del Carmen is about 2.5 hours.
Rodrigo introduced himself and our competent, professional driver Omar, he then started to find out where everyone was from. There was a good mixture on the coach with people from Mexico, Peru, Canada, Bolivia and us from the UK! Rodrigo was fluent in English and Spanish and probably more but for the purposes of this trip he said everything in both Spanish and English.
Rodrigo's tour patter was very smooth, informative and had the right amount of humour to keep you interested and entertained.
After an hour we stopped for a comfort break in clean roadside toilets with plenty of paper and soap!
Our next stop was at a Mayan heritage centre (tourist trap) where we had the opportunity to buy genuine handicrafts with all proceeds going to the local Mayan population. There was a large selection of trinkets and some good silver, obsidian and turquoise. Payment could be made in Mexican Peso, USD or on a card.
We had our meal here and there was a choice of chicken, pork or beef cooked in a Mayan style with vegetables, rice, tortillas and bean soup.
The meal was included in the price however drinks and dessert were not.
Back on to the coach for a short drive to the UNESCO world heritage site of Chitchen Itza!
We arrived and disembarked the coach speedily. What we didn't realise when we booked this excursion was that whilst in the day time you can expect to be sharing the site with 17000 other people, we had the place to ourselves!
Rodrigo is Mayan and was born in Chitchen Itza and as such is a great advocate, to our surprise he was our passionate knowledgeable archaeological guide and what he doesn't know about Chitchen Itza quite frankly isn't worth knowing!
We had plenty of opportunity to see the site and take photos whilst the sun went down and we felt very privileged to see sunset at this amazing place.
Once the sun went down the tour continued and there were even fireflies flitting about, which pleased Eva no end!
Once our tour had ended there was time for a toilet break and to collect our ipods and headsets for the evening light show! This is where they tell the story of Chitchen Itza with a laser light show projected onto the main pyramid! Eva's iPod translator didn't work during the show but with a little knowledge of Spanish and Rodrigo's previous excellent tour it was easy to follow the story.
After the show ended there was time for another comfort break as you had to queue to return your ipods. A quick side note is that when you collect your ipods you need to leave some photo id at the desk so remember to pack your driving licence or passport.
Back on the coach there was a quick stop at a local oxxo store to stock up on refreshments for the long journey home.
The first 2 hours of the journey on our lovely coach went smoothly and there was time for a nap. The only bad thing we can say about this tour was that after 2 hours, near Cancun we stopped and those of us not staying in Cancun transferred to a small mini van 12 of us in 12 seats designed to seat 12 Chihuahuas! If you're on the larger side try to get on first! The next hour was not comfortable and I would suggest that the only change the company make to this tour is to use a larger vehicle for this section of the journey!
    We arrived back at 1.30am
All in all this was an awesome experience and we would highly recommend it. We can't praise Rodrigo highly enough for his passionate knowledge, personality and care!

  • Fun but long drive from Playa. Tour driver not to friendly or talkative one the tour road trip. Unfortunately it rained so no light show but we toured the ruins with a trained guide. Very interesting. The lunch at the local hotel was good. I would recommend for the price it was good.
