This tours provides an informative and very educational look into shanty town daily life featuring the people, their homes, markets, and animals. Featured on our tour was a market, any number of homes, a community soup kitchen, a community garden, a school/library, and (by chance) a metalsmith's studio. The tenacity, creativeness and ingenuity of the Peruvian people living there was astounding. Their warmth and compassion for the others in their community was made readily apparent. Mabel (our tour leader) was exceptional as our guide and interpreter. She set the tone early and gave us insight into any number of relevant topics in this world few foreigners will have a chance to experience. Our driver (sorry terrible with names) was a master of Lima's street and it's interesting drivers. Most importantly, he delivered us from location to location safely. I most highly recommend this tour, the Haku company and Mabel as your guide. Your eyes will be opened. Guaranteed you will appreciate your life all much more.

We loved the Shantytown experience to broaden our understanding of the Peruvian people. Highly recommended.

I was unable to attend at short notice due to some heavily delayed international flights and flow on connection problems. The team at the Shanty Town experience were so friendly and graceful offering to move my experience to another day even though the policy is no refund or changes within 24 hours. The most genuine and kind people

After doing the local markets tour with Haku, I wanted to see more! This tour was so interesting and impactful. I really appreciate Haku Tours mission to support social projects in these impoverished areas. Taking the tour, we get to be part of their help for the local community - going to the markets, picking up food for the soup kitchen, visiting the work that the local leader is doing to help her community. In addition, the architecture and construction of these neighborhoods on the steep sandy hills is fascinating. Add in an amazing array of street dogs and it makes for a really unique experience.

What an authentic experience! My girlfriend and I really enjoyed our stay and visit in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Lima. Our guide was knowledgeable, smiling and friendly. Highly recommended!

If you're from the US and you've never experienced true poverty, this tour may change your life. It was an extraordinary experience to be invited in to the institutions and homes of a neighborhood where life is so hard. The garden behind one of the soup kitchens seemed like a good metaphor - built from scraps and carefully nurtured to grow something extraordinary.

I would very highly recommend this tour to anybody visiting Lima. When I travel I always look for opportunities to break out of the tourist bubble, but even beyond that I was surprised how much I enjoyed this tour. It was a truly wonderful experience to meet and visit with the residents of this shanty town north of Lima, and they seemed sincerely happy to meet somebody from the US. I was impressed at how well they were able to build lives out of scrap materials and jerry-rigged electrical wiring. I was equally impressed with the tour company, how they work with the people help them maintain the necessities of life. I very rarely (never) write reviews, but if I could give this tour 10 stars out of 5, that would still be an understatement of how much I enjoyed this experience.

This was a great private tour of a Lima Shantytown from actual residents. You will explore the town in detail and learn firsthand from their elected leader and hear about volunteer opportunities as well. Your money goes directly to helping the town.
