Depart from your Akureyri hotel and travel by Mini Bus into the Icelandic countryside. Look out for steaming vents, unusual rock formations and lava stacks all evidence of the powerful volcanic forces at play in this area.
See Lake Mvatn, a volcanic lake known for its thriving bird population, before going off-road onto a rugged track. We travel in a 4x4 Truck to the mouth of the cave, through rugged lava fields and crater rows. Drive by the crater of the imposing Hverfell volcano and through the striking crater row of Ldentarborgir. As you ride, your guide will explain how these geological features came to be.
Before reaching the mouth, you will hike for around 30 minutes. Once you reach the caves entrance, suit up in your safety gear and prepare to descend. Forget about the world overhead as you enter the depths of the Ice Cave. Lofthellir is a unique cave, a lava tube tunnel but filled with Ice. Look around the dark chambers, corridors and crevices, pausing to admire the intriguing ice sculptures and rock formations.
After around an hour in the cave observing its features and learning about the various natural phenomenon, head back to the surface. After the hike back to the vehicle, relax as you make your way to the village of Reykjahl, which sits on the shore of Lake Mvatn. Here, you can grab a bite to eat (own expense), before returning to your hotel in Akureyri, where the tour will end.

A minivan picked me up from Akureyri, and more people to another tour. Then they got confused and drove me halfway back to a different van, and on the way back I didn’t find this van that was suppose to drive me back to Akureyri. The tour is not long, the cave is really dark and you can’t really see too much.. the hosts and very nice and professional but I wouldn’t do that again, not worth the money

Fantastic cave exploration adventure in this permafrost lava tunnel. For those who like an off the beaten path challenge. It was a bit intimidating, but our guide, Inga, was terrific. She was patient, gave great instructions and was very knowledgeable throughout the tour. So glad we did this.

This was an absolutely amazing day. Our Host Armann was delightfully entertaining throughout the day and informed us of Icelandic history and the geography of Northern Iceland as we drove to the cave. After a modest hike to the cave, we geared up for an exciting exploration through the cave where we learned about the creation of the caves and all the ice stalactites and stalagmites. My kids went in thinking that it would be interesting but left saying it was the best part of our Iceland adventure. ON the way back to Akureyri we stopped at Godafoss and saw one of the many amazing falls. This is a trip not to be missed!
