Know More about this tour

Follow the lamplight of your guide as you discover the terror of a Great Fire that ate up Gastown in minutes, the long forgotten plague of smallpox, and the unsolved murder of John Bray a man who wandered the streets for two delirious weeks after being shot three times in the head.

Designed for adult audiences, the experience is both a walking tour and a theatre piece. Every story is grounded in documented Vancouver history, taken from the city archives. The plot line is woven together as the tragic tale of one person's life, ending in a dramatic finale in the heart of Gastown's Maple tree square.

As you travel along cobblestone streets you'll visit our city's oldest hotel - the Victorian, learn the truth about the historic Gastown Steam Clock, see how Vancouver looked before and after the Great Fire, explore notorious Gaoler's Mews, and walk down the back alleys of Water Street to famous Maple tree square. Every one of Gastown's must-see sites and landmarks is visited on the walk.

Do not expect a ghost tour or conventional walking tour this is an experience that will pull you so deep into the swirling lamplight and darkened alleys of Gastowns murky past you may have a hard time finding your way back out

Our tour guide, Tracy, did an amazing job portraying her 1800's character throughout the tour. She was super informative and engaging. All in all a wonderful evening well spent. Highly recommend 😊

This was absolutely amazing! We were 100% invested in the story that was being told as well as learning about the history of Vancouver and Gastown. It brought in a lot of the culture and early times that people faced such as smallpox or finding work. Janet was our tour guide, and she really got into character that at some points had me in tears. She had funny stories, scary stories, and lots of in between! I would highly recommend this one to anyone looking for a late evening activity!

Janet was our tour guide and she played the part beautifully. Costume, hair and make up in the period of the late 1800’s. She was informative and interesting of things that happened during that time frame. It was a lot of walking in and in dark alleys I guess there was safety in numbers as were about 30 in our group. Description did not let us know the tour ended so far away from the starting point. We needed a taxi to get back.

Thank you Rowan for a pleasurable evening! The tour guide is completely in character the whole time and is quite a surreal experience - even down to carrying the lamp through the old streets of Gastown. Incredibly interesting stories, and well choreographed. We had a local intervene and try to disrupt us, but Rowan handled it professionally and should be commended on his efforts. Is quite a fascinating way to experience the history that Vancouver has to offer!

A fun evening walk and story-telling in Gastown!

Rowan was an amazing tour guide, relating the story of Gastown with great knowledge and passion whilst in the 19th century character of George - complete with candle lamplight. We were taken to places we would never have ventured to alone, partly because we would not have found them and partly because they appeared unwelcoming - but they added richly to the story. We learnt a lot and enjoyed the whole experience - thank you very much Rowan, an excellent performance for your very first tour.

This was a lot of fun: entertaining, insightful, and a good walk around a busy area, learning about the area and the history. This group also has other local tours, and it'd be great to check them out too. We booked the Prohibition tour for the next day, based on this one, and were not disappointed.

We did not know what to expect when we booked - and was a a great experience in an area of the city we might never have seen. The story we followed was totally engaging and it was over an hour of being taken to a different place in time. Great story - well told and acted. Do it!!!!
