Know More about this tour

A Malta temples tour is a must for anyone who travels to this beautiful Mediterranean island. Malta and Gozo are home to seven megalithic temples, all of which are designated as world heritage sites by UNESCO. These megalithic temples date back 5500 years ago and are the oldest free-standing stone structures in the world, even older than the Stonehenge and the Pyramids. It is also home to more than thirty other temples, all of which reflect Maltas rich past.

You will first drive to Ghar Dalam. Gar Dalams relevance as a prehistoric site was discovered in the latter half of the 19th Century with a series of excavations unearthing animal bones as well as human remains and artifacts. The Cave is a highly important site for its Palaeontology, archaeology and ecology. The history of the cave and that of the Islands can be decoded from Gar Dalams stratigraphy. The lowermost layers, more than 500,000 years old, contained the fossil bones of dwarf elephants, hippopotami, micro-mammals and birds among other species. This layer is topped by a pebble layer, and on top of it there is the so-called deer layer, dated to around 18,000 years ago. The top layer, or cultural layer, dates less than 10,000 years and holds evidence of the first humans on the Island. It was here that the earliest evidence of human settlement on Malta, some 7,400 years ago, was discovered. The site consists of a cave, a Victorian style exhibition and a didactic display as well as a garden planted with indigenous plants and trees.

You will then visit Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Temples. The megalithic complex of Hagar Qim is located atop a hill on the southern edge of the Island, on a ridge capped in soft globigerina limestone. All exposed rock on the island was deposited during the Oligocene and Miocene periods of geological time. 500 metres from Hagar Qim stands the Mnajdra megalithic temple. The surrounding area is typical of Mediterranean garrigue in its starkness and isolation; it is designated as a Heritage park. A few hundred meters from the temple is one of the thirteen watchtowers built by Grand Master Martin de Redin, called Hamrija Tower.

Well organised and on time - email to confirm hotel pick up time the night before and minibus direct back rather than with main coach. Good guide. Hagar Qim is the best of the temples in my opinion but enjoyed both Mnajdra and the cave at Ghar Dalam as well.

Guide was excellent story teller but I feel that was exactly what it was, a story. The temples themselves were disappointing not at all what expected, they had been reconstructed and new, not authentic for a ruin. The electric car was a life saver. The cave was the best part of the tour

This was an incredible tour of pre historic temples. It was amazing to look around, would have loved a little bit more archaeological information including possible theories as to how it was built etc. Very unspoilt, but also as tourist would've loved to purchase a souvenir of some kind.

This tour was organsied by Supreme Travel, one of the three we booked for our week's stay and this was the best. After a slightly disorganised and long pickups, we had a fabulous day with Mark. Mark was an excellent guide, informative, clear, patient, happy to take questions and answer them. We loved the Caves of Darkness and its little museum - so interesting and well explained. The prehistoric temples were amazing and we were given enough time to ponder and take pictures. Mark was engaging and organised, the tours were well paced. All in all a highly recommended trip - must see on Malta.

We weren’t sure what to expect when we signed up for this tour, however, our tour guide made it memorable. He was very knowledgeable about the temples. It wouldn’t surprise me to find out that he had an archeology degree as his discussions were full of germane comments about what was in front of us. He answered any questions, his English was excellent, and he did a good job of projecting his voice so all could here.

The temples we're fascinating to see and hear about. The cave was fairly interesting- not really worth visiting on its own, but good as part of the temples tour.
