Snorkeling with the Manta Rays
Snorkel with manta rays, only seen in the warm waters off the Kona Coast of the Big Island. Don't miss this spectacular 2.5 hour experience after a Hawaiian sunset. Meet your guide at Honokohau Harbor and board a boat to the snorkel location, just a 15 minute ride away.
As the sun sets you'll tuck into a bay at the manta feeding area. Learn about the manta rays in Hawaii and receive a safety briefing on viewing guidelines and proper etiquette while in the water. Slip into a provided wetsuit, which helps keep you warm in temperatures that average 65 to 70 degrees, then put on your snorkel gear and enter the water with your guide.
You will hold onto a comfortable bar attached to a large surfboard with LED drop lights, allowing you to watch as mantas feed on millions of minuscule plankton attracted by the bright lights. Your guide keeps your board positioned over the manta ray snorkeling area. The manta rays may come very close, but they are considered to be harmless giants of the sea; unlike eagle rays or stingrays they have no teeth or stinger. With an 85 percent chance of seeing manta rays.

I chose this company because I saw in an advertisement that they have a large raft with a viewing window in the middle. I figured if my 10 year-old was too scared in the water, he could at least sit on the raft and watch the manta rays through the window. (He did fine and LOVED it!). We went twice because on the first trip, there were no manta rays. The company rebooked us on another trip with zero hassle- no codes, voucher numbers to keep, extra cost, etc. Oleathia has been a gem with booking and rebooking our snorkel trips. The boat crew was also excellent (Danny, Diego, Tiana, and the captain (I can’t remember his name 🫤)). Our second trip was a huge success- there were so many manta rays! This was my family’s FAVORITE activity by far. We will definitely book this activity with C Big Island again.

The crew were fun and knowledgeable. They were also very helpful and hospitable to everyone. They even handled people whom got sea sick well.

Swimming with the manta rays was a highlight of our trip to Hawaii. Trevor, Diego and Ryan made a great team and were alot of fun. We were able to see several rays close up and the guides provided helpful insights and education about them. I highly recommend this tour while visiting Hawaii.

Great trip with Chris and Buddah. We saw a dolphin pod too. Buddah does a great job finding the manta rays and Chris is an excellent and gracious captain. We only found ray but he was a BIG one and looked so cool with his wide open mouth and the way his wings wave as he swims. Even before we saw the manta ray it was great seeing baby eels and fish. Parents just one word of advice: if your kids aren’t confident floaters at night this may not be the trip for you. One kid kicked the entire time which can keep the rays away.

The trip was great. There was only 3 of us but they took us out anyway. We didn't see many manta rays, but we did see several dolphins. It was great, Leena and her crew were a lot of fun. One of my top 5 experiences.

Captain Chris and Buddha were very welcoming. The smooth boat ride was very quick. Once we were is the water, it didn’t take long for the Manta Rays to appear. One Manta looked to be about 7 feet long and came within inches of me!! This was an incredible and amazing experience!

Chris and Buddha were incredible, so friendly and helpful throughout the whole tour and wonderful at their job. We saw so many manta rays while out and had heaps of time to experience their magnificence. Would 100% recommend if you’re on the island.

Trevor, Ryan, and Diego were amazing!! They were professional and ensured everyone had an amazing time! We saw 6 manta rays while snorkeling. Definitely recommend this tour!!

The trip itself was good. We had to wait on two groups and one was a no show. This cut into our time and was never made up. We weren’t in the water very long. Our time was from 8-10 p.m. We got to the dive site at 8:25 and we’re in our car leaving the dock at 9:57 p.m.

Night snorkeling was definitely an experience. The waters were warm and being able to see manta rays was very exciting. The staff were very personable and friendly. However, the trip and boat ride did not feel as safe/fun as we had expected. It was not as guided for the transition from boat to water, especially for novice swimmers. It was rough waters at night, and the water was very cold after 15 minutes. We were more focused on staying afloat and connected to the vessel than actually watching for manta rays. For the price, we’ve had much better snorkeling experiences, so we’re disappointed with the outcome. Overall, the experience was interesting and we’re glad to have seen the sea life, but it does not come high on my recommended list.
