Know More about this tour

The Maritime Museum of San diego is housed in one of the finest collection of historic ships in the world. The iconic and majestic Star of india is docked in downtown San diego on the beautiful waterfront and is the main attraction at the museum. The museum's collection includes a Soviet submarine the B-39, an American research submarine the USS Dolphin and the HMS Surprise (star of Master and Commander and Pirates of the Caribbean 4), just to name a few.

The museum is kid friendly and encourages hands on experiences for families. Many of our ships go sailing, whale watching, or just cruise around the bay. Occasionally you may witness a pirate or two wandering around, who just might help put a smile on your childs face.

The museum also contains a world renowned research library as well as a retail shop with lots of souvenirs, historic and academic books or memorabilia for sale. The museum is a great place to watch July 4 fireworks, spend the night with your family on board or sail up the California coast to Catalina. The Maritime Museum of San Diego offers something for everyone!

Excellent collection of ships including replica and restored vessels. In addition to seeing great ships, this is a huge learning experience. We saw the Star of India, the USS Dolphin sub, Medea yacht, and the Berkely ferry. All were excellent. It’s said this is the third best maritime museum in the World. Not sure what numbers 1 and 2 are.

Awesome old ships. Can’t believe people lived on them months at a time. They are pretty spacious though.

Pre-paid online for our tickets and the woman at the booth still overcharged our card when we added on the harbor tour - and it was the slowest transaction ever. We got to the first boat and an incredibly unfriendly woman informed us that strollers are not permitted - we had a sleeping baby, so I essentially saw nothing but the gift shop after being charged twice for admission. I totally understand the stroller policy but she was so snide that it made the entire visit a disappointment. While my husband made a quick tour of the boats, I was stuck sitting in an itchy, dirty chair at the entrance while she slurped her lunch and stared at me. It was disconcerting to say the least. We have visited many historic museums that appreciate families and realize that they’re an excellent source of revenue. The USS Midway next door is a great example with volunteers that engage the children and have activities specifically for them. I’d skip this museum if you have children and find another option that’s more welcoming.

Each exhibit is completely different. Consider it a form of immersive history. Definitely take the $10 boat trip, best value on the bay. Excellent guides can answer any questions about the military and container ships nearby.

This was a surprisingly fun stop on my trip. We went as three adults with no kids and still found it interesting to explore the ships and learn about the history. Nothing too thrilling about this place, but if you're the type that enjoys learning and museums, or just like ships, it's a nice way to spend a few hours.

Nice museum but the guy running the ticket counter was a jerk. He was carrying a cooler and my son was accidentally in his way - he was quite rude about it.

This was pretty cool but allow for 3 hrs, 2 hes was long enough for us. I loved seeing the details of each boat. Great information on our history.

Fun, informative walking tour of historical ships. We enjoyed exploring the submarine and the various ships in the harbor. The museum has a lot of displays and information, and we learned a lot. Nice experience and we learned a lot!
