Know More about this tour

Head to the waterfront in Picton to meet your boat. Your captain welcomes you aboard and provides a safety briefing, before you set off on your cruise through the magnificent waterways of the Marlborough Sounds. Along the way, your captain talks about the landmarks you pass, notes the inter-island ferry routes, and points out wildlife such as birds, seals and dolphins.

After about an hour of traveling through Queen Charlotte Sound, you reach Ship Cove where your boat docks. Enjoy at least 30 minutes on your own to explore this island, where Captain James Cook anchored to resupply his ship, The Endeavor, visiting several times in the late 1700s. Interactions between Cooks crew and the local Maori people were some of the earliest contact between Maori and Europeans in New Zealand. Learn more about the natural and cultural history of the island from informative displays along the trails. You can also find a monument to Cook, a number of tall carved Maori statues, and a sheltered beach.

At the appointed time, return to your boat to cruise to Endeavor Inlet to pick up and drop off passengers that are staying in resorts around the area. From Endeavor Inlet, soak up spectacular views of the Marlborough Sounds as your boat returns to Picton, arriving after about an hour at the waterfront where your tour ends.

We had a great day cruising the Marlborough Sound with Beachcomber Cruises. Our captain and guide gave us great background information and as a bonus we saw dusky dolphins.

  • 28-Oct-2022

Our tour guide stopped so we could see dolphins. That was nice of him to locate them in the sound. He provided good commentary of the location and history.

Great cruise, very informative and a beautiful way to explore the sounds. Even managed to see dolphins thanks to the skipper, perfect cruise if you only have a half day to spare.

It was a very picturesque easy goidstart; informative; friendly enjoyable boat mail delivery trip with skipper Phill (great sense of humour too) Only complaint not seeing seals or Orca (fee sleeping dolphins) Ih and no offer of a hot beverage (and it was chilly)

  • 23-Jul-2022

Just being in the Marlborough Sounds & hearing some real stories from a local family, delivered with humour. The weather wasn't helpful, being very cloudy and cool, however, we all still thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and hope to return to do a different cruise. Learning more about mussel farming & King salmon was most interesting..

Absolutely loved it. Interesting commentary and beautiful scenery. Nice boat. Not too long, not too short. Easy with small kids too. Ship cove and seeing some dolphins was a highlight.
