Know More about this tour

Board a coach in Vienna in the morning and relax on the drive out to the Austrian countryside. Travel through the Wachau Valley, a 24-mile (39-km) stretch of the Danube river carving a picturesque path between the towns of Krems and Melk. Characterized by vineyards, forested slopes, wine-producing villages, mysterious castles and imposing fortresses, Wachaus harmonious blend of natural and cultural beauty won the area a UNESCO World Heritage title.
Learn about the history of this beautiful part of Austria from your guide on your way to the medieval castle ruins of Burgruine Drnstein, where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned while waiting for his ransom to arrive from England.
In Spitz, transfer to a boat and cruise down the Danube through the heart of the valley, passing the old wine town of Krems before arriving in Melk. Here you'll visit Melk Abbey, a magnificent Benedictine abbey on a rocky outcrop overlooking the river. First established in the 11th century and rebuilt in the 18th century, Melk Abbey has housed monks for 900 years, and today its architecture is a remarkable example of Austrians baroque style.
Have time for lunch in town (own expense) before relaxing on the drive back to Vienna, concluding at the Vienna state opera in the evening.

This was a wonderful day trip from Vienna. We met on the corner of the Opera House at Operngasse and Opernring. A representative in a yellow slicker was there to check us in and then we went on a nice, large, comfortable coach. We first stopped in the town of Krems for photos and a quick walk of the old town on our own buying coffee, pastries and a souvenirs of course! Next stop was Dürnstein along the river. It's a small village with winding streets and lovely quaint homes and stores. We bought schnapps and liqueurs in a great wine shop (Wieser Wachau - don't miss that place). We walked just a little up the hill close to the ruined castle that once held Richard the Lion Heart in 1192. Fascinating. We walked thru town and then along the Danube and back to the bus. We had a nice length of time to stop there too. Then we stopped at the Hotel-Restaurant Zum Schwarzen Bären (the Black Bear Inn) and had a very nice included lunch of soup, pork, rice, vegetables, rolls and dessert. Then onto Melk with a guided tour! This baroque palace of the Babenberg’s is well over 1,000 years old and looks like something out of a fairy tale. It was given to the Benedictine monks for their monastery in 1089 and is one of the best museums in Austria. It holds countless artifacts from the centuries, reliquaries, triptych portable altars, vestments, and artwork. The Library has tens of thousands of books going back to the 10th century – the library itself is a work of art. Still a monastery and school for 900 students, the property is in pristine condition. Lovely outdoor restaurant in the summer. The view from the terrace is magnificent. The church is the highlight of the tour. This church is not only the most beautiful in Austria but in Europe. I have seen many, many churches, cathedrals and basilicas over the last 20 years traveling thru Europe but this is the most gorgeous church I have ever seen anywhere. It is high baroque artwork at its finest. Money had not been spared when the interior of this church was completed in the early 1700's. It is a representation of heaven on earth. Don’t miss it. We were home promptly at 6:00 and had plenty of time to have a nice dinner and visit the Christmas markets when we arrived back in Vienna. I highly recommend this tour.

A comfortable double decker bus trip through the Austrian country side and along the Danube River valley was a great way to begin the visit to Melk Abby. This pleasure was further enhanced by a short stop at beautiful old village set into the steep hillside and surrounded by vineyards in full autumn splendour and overlooked by ancient castle ruins on the sky line. The boat trip to the Abby provided a different perspective on the landscape as well as a pleasant dining opportunity. Despite the numerous tour groups all going to the Abby, our group was well timed so there was no clashes with other groups following us. The Abby tour itself was a great experience with special guides by language making it easy to follow the flow of the commentary in your own language. Although the Abby has multiple levels, there were lifts to cater for the less able of our group to cope with the beautiful stairs. No photos inside the Abby - amazing - go and see for yourself. Outside, the formal gardens were spectacular presenting a wide range of vistas and unusual ornaments and statues. Being an autumn visit the colours were fantastic. In one secluded garden, bright yellow and red leaves slowly spiralled down from the tall trees and were illuminated by shafts of sunlight against the dark green of the conifers before adding to to the golden carpet on the lawn. Too soon we had to leave, taking the motorway back to the city. A great day I can thoroughly recommend.

We had a great time on this tour. Highlight was the boat ride on the River Danube. Breathtaking. Restaurant on the boat was great too. Not much to see in Melk other than the Abbey. Overall great tour and would recommend

Get very specific meet up location information. They gave us outdated information about meeting at the 'rabbit' near the opera house. Apparently this is long gone. There were several buses and groups leaving from the same location. Otherwise a lovely day to Durnstein (if you have time climb the castle) and Melk Abbey. Beautiful hour or so on the Danube River too.

Good tour with interesting sites. Apart from the 1.5 hr cruise (where you can get lunch), we stopped at two other places. We had an hour of free time in each place. The one hour guided tour of the Abby was good. The drive back was only 1 hr and 15 minutes.

Very relaxed ride with boat ride for lunch. Food was ok on boat.
The trip to the abbey was a beautiful site. Tip: bring water if you need it, long day!

It is a very good 1 day trip from Vienna.

Tour guides were very good (guide from the city + guide at Melk Abbey) and informative.

You will get sufficient time to explore Very Scenic Wachau Valley and Melk Abbey.

The mini cruise ride was also very beautiful. As it was raining, so was not able to experience the ride completely from top floor. But in summer it will be a great experience

All together, if you have time and don't know what to do. Go for it!! It will certainly not disappoint you. :)
