Know More about this tour

After pickup from Messina cruise port or the nearby tourist information point, travel by air-conditioned coach to Castelmola, a picturesque village situated just above Taormina.

Hop out here to enjoy the beautiful setting and wonderful outlook over the magnificent bay of Giardini-Naxos and Mt Etna rising in the distance.

Continue into Taormina and see the 19th-century Porta Messina gateway before a guided walk along the Corso Umberto, once part of the ancient Roman street of Via Valeria. Stroll along this pretty, traffic-free street and enjoy a guided look at the town’s oldest churches and monuments, as well the most exclusive shops and restaurants.

Taste some typical Sicilian specialities and sweets at pastry and ice cream shops, and visit Taormina’s Greco-Roman theater, the second-largest of its kind in Sicily, built by the Greeks in the 3rd century BC.

On return to Messina, stop to explore the highlights of this historical port. Delve into the heart of the old city, and visit Cathedral Square (Duomo) to see Messina Cathedral, home to the world’s biggest astronomical clock.

View the Church of the Catalans, an extraordinary example of 12th- and 13th-century Arab-Norman art, and visit the panoramic terrace between the Shrine of Christ the King and the Sanctuary of Montalto for spectacular views over the Strait of Messina.

  • Our guide Chiara met us at the cruise terminal and proceeded to take us on a very interesting and informative tour of Taormina and Castlemola. The small group size was nice and the mini bus was comfortable. Our guide was pleasant and answered all of our questions thoroughly. We were very pleased with this tour.

  • Super day in a small group, both towns are fabulous. Castelmola is much smaller and easily explored - Taormina was stunning the small streets the Greek theater lots of steps, cute restaurants..loved it all. We were lucky, Taormina was getting ready for G7 but we got there just before security became intense

  • Great Guide and destination! Only confusing part was meeting up at the cruise port. This could be improved, but overall, we recommend this tour and the guide.

  • Visit to Castemola and Taormina a must. Don't waste time staying in Messina.

  • interesting tour and worth seeing. The tour mobile got us close to Castelmola where the big buses couldn't go. However the guide was pre-occupied and simply march us through the streets without much detail. She didn't keep the group together and strolled ahead without much concern. She then released us to shop for an extended amount of time 1.5 hours. We're glad we saw these wonderful sites, but the guide wasn't worth the extra cost over just getting transportation.

  • Taormina is stunning!! You must visit it, so please don't let my 2 stars disappoint you.
My 2 stars are specifically directed at the tour guide that led us that day. She was completely disorganized as we came off the ship. She had us follow another tour guide with a different tour agenda to a place where supposedly our bus was waiting for us. This new guide was only concerned with her own group, so they didn't wait for us and lost us. After the craziness and the anxiety of missing our tour, we and several others walked a few blocks and found someone to direct us to our bus. We get one the bus and the AC was off. They made us wait 30 minutes in terrible heat, while we waited for the other tour participants, which I'm sure they were lost too. When they finally arrived, there were not enough seats in the bus for all of us. It was terrible to see that older passengers were made to stand. At that point, it was like musical chairs, the younger offering seats to the older. The tour guide finally gets on our bus and tells us we are all on the wrong bus, as this one is too small for our group. No apologies, no acknowledgement that 1 hour has passed, we are incredibly hot, uncomfortable and many of us standing. RUDE guide, even ruder driver take us driving to another plaza where we are all to switch buses. CRAZY. By now it's 11:55 am and we are not in the right bus. Needless to say, the tour guide was terrible. When we arrived at Taormina, we fell in love with the place, but we had had enough of our guide, so we separated and walked around by ourselves. We came back to the meeting point at the assigned time to go to Castelmora, to find out the tour guide had decided to cancel our visit to Castelmora and that we would stay another 90 minutes in Taormina. As the town is beautiful and the day was pretty, we were ok to stay and didn't say a word. So disorganized and unfriendly. I think Viator should pass this feedback on to the local tour company. Yikes.

  • Our tour was cut short in that we could not go to Castelmola for security reasons due to the G7 Conference being held in Taormina. Taormina was a very interesting and beautiful city with a fantastically restored Roman Colliseum. It is 300-500 meters up from the sea and you can take many beautiful pictures of the sea and sea front. Very nice shopping areas too. The benefit of the G7 was that we had a lot of free time in Taormina, but down side was that we would not go up many side streets as they were ALL covered by police, military or other security as they had already been cleared for the G7. The tour leader was excellent and we learned a lot about Messina too.
