Overview

Immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of Milford Sound during a boat cruise led by a naturalist guide. On board a smaller-sized vessel than typical Milford Sound cruises, enjoy indoor and outdoor observation decks that provide fantastic photo ops of this famous South Island natural wonder inside New Zealand's World Heritage–listed Fiordland National Park. Stay on the water longer than most other tours, and get close to the waterfalls and other natural features that give the sound its nickname, the Eighth Wonder of the World.

Know More about this tour

Start your journey at the Milford Sound Visitor Centre, where your captain welcomes you aboard your boat. With a maximum capacity of just 75 people (less than half the capacity of the average Milford Sound cruise), your cruise provides the ease of traveling with a smaller group aboard a comfortable vessel equipped with large viewing windows, warm indoor seating and spacious outdoor decks.

Enjoy a cup of hot tea or coffee, and set off through the waterways of Milford Sound, which are lined by rugged mountains, snowy peaks and waterfalls that tumble from the cliffs, lacing the rock walls with frothy cascades. This renowned landscape is part of New Zealand's Fiordland National Park, which is part of the larger Te Wahipounamu, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Due to your boat’s smaller size and agility, your captain can get close enough to the cliffs to give you a taste of the pure glacier-fed waters of the waterfalls.

While your guide helps you spot marine life that can be spotted in the icy water, such as seals, bottlenose dolphins and Fiordland crested penguins, learn about the native animals found here and how the land formed from glaciers. Marvel at majestic mountains like Mitre Peak, which stands 5,550 feet (1,692 meters) tall.

At the end of the cruise, your captain returns you to the Visitor Centre.

  • Great tour - We got lucky with good weather and got to see penguins and seals! A nature cruise is the best way to see Milford Sound.

  • Beautiful!

  • Great cruise. Well run.

  • Even though it was raining it was one of the most memorable trips I have been on. Crew/Staff was friendly and insightful. I would highly recommend to anyone.

  • The Nature Cruise in Milford Sound was sepctacular! The guide was very informative and friendly. The cruise was slow and graceful. You are constantly in awe of the majestic nature with it's dramatic flair around you. Love it and will recommend it to everyone.

  • Excellent even in the rain!!!

  • Taking the Milford Sound Nature Cruise was terrific. My son and I drove from Greymouth down to Te Anau the night before and made the short drive to Milford Sound early the next morning. We arrived in time to have a great coffee and toasted sandwich and then went off for a 2 hours trip viewing the fjord and environs. Jack, the 'emcee' for the cruise that day, was great - he enlightened us travelers with many facts of the history and formation of Milford Sound and pointed out the various flora and fauna along the way. Even though it was raining it usually is, it was a most enjoyable experience and recommend it highly.

  • Spectacular experience for our family. Staff on the boat were sensational and displayed both care and humour over the coarse of the trip. Very professional!

  • You can't do justice to Milford Sound without taking a cruise out. The land views are great but they can't compare to the amazing views from the water. We had to adjust our trip, arrived a day earlier than we had originally scheduled but they made the necessary last minute adjustments to honor our reservation. We can't begin to thank them enough for this accommodation.

  • Even with the pooring rain, this tour was great. The guide was super knowledgeable and his comments were extremely interesting. Most do if you are in this region.
