Engaging guide. Knowledgeable of how to time island visit and get monkeys to show up. Saw ships traversing lake between the locks (and their waves). Saw and fed several Capuchin monkeys. Saw howler monkeys. Indigenous village visit was interesting and informative. It is a real village. Take cash to purchase their handmade goods. Participants need to be able to sit still and be quiet. Take bug spray, hat and light jacket/windbreaker (if rains). Great combo of activities.
I had a group of 50 come to Panma City for a conference. The leaders in town a day early did the Monkey Island Tour and Indian Village, Barefoot Panama handled all of our airport transfers (to and from) and then gave us a full group tour of the city (Miraflores locks and Casco Viejo) as well. Can't say enough about the prompt communication which made planning a breeze for the many moving parts of our group. All tour guides were right on time for every pick-up. Payment and invoicing was very clear. Tour guides are knowledgeable and gave great information even while we were just driving to and from the different sites.
We never made it. The pickup time for my tour was set through the Viator app which is arranged on an individual basis. I selected 8 am which is the time that shows on my tickets. We were on time outside at 7:55a day of the tour. Come to find out Barefoot Tours Panama had messaged me through the Viator app saying they were coming at 7:30a to confirm the day before while I’m traveling to PTY. The second message was the morning of the tour at 7:38a that the driver was waiting and I wasn’t answering. We called Barefoot tours directly at 8:02 am and spoke with Kevin O’Brien (owner) who was unprofessional and condescending, used profanities with my husband, and called me an idiot saying that all tourists have internet so I should have been checking for updates. He could have very well worked with us at that point that it was a few minutes past 8a but instead he laughed and said his guy was already on his way and I should be the one to call the driver myself. The main point is I never received any notification that the pickup time was changed from 8 am to 7:30a nor did I confirm. The logical thing for the driver/company would have been to wait until 8 am before leaving but Kevin was fine with keeping my money for services not rendered with glee. This isn't a reflection on Panamanians as this is just another shady American playing house in Panama while taking advantage of tourists.
The first part of our tour to the monkey island was great, the boat trip and monkeys are really entertaining and the nature is beautiful. After that we were visiting the local tribe. This was such a disappointment. There was no interaction or whatsoever. Just a group of people sitting there acting quite uninterested to us and just wanting us to buy our handicrafts. It was so useless to go there and for such a big amount of money for the whole trip really not worth it. There was nothing to see there and felt like a rip off. The whole tour is sold as ‘full day - 7 hours’ but literally took us not even 5 hours in total. The guide was very friendly but I would definitely not recommend to go to this local village and save your money for another tour.
Great experience, amazing guide. He has really good knowledge and was accommodating to us. (Make sure you bring nuts and grapes with you, the monkeys are not interested in bananas)
FIRST OF ALL MY GUIDE WAS SUPER GREAT ,SO NICE AND PLEASANT,KNOWLEDGEABLE,COULD NOT HAVE HAD A BETTER GUIDE .THE PLACES HE TOOK US WERE BEAUTFUL .I WOULD EVEN DO THE TRIPS AGAIN WITH HIM .THANK YOU SO MUCH first of all my guide was super great, so nice and pleasant, knowledgeable, could not have had a better guide the places he took us were beautiful and interesting i would even do the same trip with him again .thank you so much
The Monkey Island part of the tour was great. Would have been better if the guide let us feed the monkeys more than he did. And if he offered to take photos. The Indian Village was ok. Our guide spoke on their behalf when normally they do it. I was ok with this 'cause I don't understand Spanish, otherwise would have been disappointed. But the problem is that the Indigenous didn't interact until it came time to sell. There is pressure to buy something. The overall tour is overpriced with no lunch included. Especially since I paid $40 more using their marketer Viator. When I tried contacting the owner of Barefoot Panama to obtain the difference, since Viator has a Low Price Guarantee they wouldn't honor saying the tours are different when Barefoot confirmed they're the same, the owner acted like he didn't receive my correspondence, had the nerve to say "stop harassing me" though I barely contacted him, that I "obviously have issues" though I was professional, and to "refrain from ever contacting him again". WOW. Use a company instead that actually respects you as a customer and appreciates your business.
This tour was absolutely spectacular from start to finish. Our guide, Gonzo, was a walking encyclopedia - we learned SO much about Panama’s history and culture. The boat ride was beautiful, cruising along massive shipping boats on the Canal, and the wildlife was incredible - we saw three species of monkeys, all kinds of birds, an iguana, and a crocodile! The visit to the indigenous village was a definite highlight. Gonzo went out of his way when driving back and forth to take different routes so we could see as much as possible. Highly, highly recommend this experience.
Really great experience. Tourguide Gonzo was knowledgeable and funny. Got to see all three kinds of monkeys! And the village tour was so interesting. Reasonable price for souvenirs.
We did 4 days of activities. The tour guide on the first two days was super nice but I call it the Instagram tour. It was superficial. If we asked about the naturaleza or a more in-depth question about the history or tour, his answer was “I don’t know.” Or, my favorite was “That’s something French.” The snorkeling trip was our favorite part. The lunch place was pretty expensive but the tour guide was extremely informative and well-versed in the history and the interests of tourists. The last day was Isla Taboga. Barefoot didn’t provide transportation to the ferry and barely any information about how to get there. Recommendations would have been helpful. A friendly guide met us and got us set up on the beach, but then disappeared. He recommended we put our stuff in the bar area for safe keeping because it would be watched but when we returned from lunch it was not being watched. The beach wasn’t luxurious by any means. I would skip it - not the tour company’s fault at all. Lunch was only okay. Our order was taken at the port and we did not receive the correct order. Not worth the value. In general there was a lack of helpful information and communication. I asked about covid info and tips on what to bring. The answers I received were kind of flippant and not very helpful. So, not geared to tourists? My family called it Barebones Panama. We appreciated the adjusted price for a package deal and the restaurant recommendations. The tour guides we always prompt. The vehicle was clean. They were good drivers and wore their masks consistently. Be forewarned that as of May 2022 the Canal museum wasn’t open. Just the viewing area.
