Overview

Experience the magic of traveling opera during a 2-hour operatic performance at the grand Palazzo Barbarigo Minotto in Venice. Performed by the acclaimed Musica a Palazzo ensemble, this night of opera, song and music features world-class singers and instrumentalists performing as they move, with the audience, through the palazzos beautiful salons. With the singers performing feet away and the lavish rooms providing authentic backdrops, youll feel as if youre part of the opera, not in the audience. Choose from three classic operas or a selection of duets to suit your tastes and schedule.

Know More about this tour

Select the performance you want to see you at the time you book choosing from The Barber of Seville, La Traviata orRigoletto, a selection of much-loved operatic and chamber music songs (see the Itinerary for show details). Then, on the night, make your own way to the Palazzo Barbarigo Minotto in central Venice.

Overlooking the Grand Canal, the 15th-century Barbarigo Minotto provides the perfect stage for the Musica a Palazzo, the acclaimed ensemble who perform the traveling opera event. This group of world-class singers and musicians perform each scene in a series of intimate, historically furnished salons, enabling greater interaction with the audience and making the rooms part of the scenery.

As you arrive, admire the beautiful palazzo interiors, taking in their Venetian Baroque artworks, stuccoes, frescoes and grand furnishings.

If you wish, buy a libretto (translation of opera words) and take a seat in the salon where the first scene will be played. Then, as the instrumentalists, pianist and singers begin, lose yourself in their virtuoso voices and music.

With each new act or scene, move to another salon with the performers and feel yourself become part of the opera itself. The singers will move around the room as they perform their arias and duets, and many salons are bathed in soft candlelight, adding to the emotional charge and romance of the event.

During one of the two intervals, enjoy a complimentary glass of fruit juice, soda, prosecco or red or white wine, and soak up the magical setting as you await the next act.

After the 2-hour performance, opt to buy a CD, DVD or postcards of the performance you've just witnessed. Then, head back to your hotel independently, humming your favorite arias on route.

  • Absolutely wonderful! Not an opera fan, or at least I didn't think I was! So entertaining! Incredible musicians and singers. Definitely a lifetime experience! Actors having fun with the musicians and audience adds to the comedy, would recommend to everyone!

  • In the early days of opera, performances were presumably given in the private homes of rich patrons. Elaborate staging came later. So the Musica a Palazzo style has authenticity as well as vitality, hilarity in the case of the Barber of Seville anyway and a high standard of acting and musicianship. Being so close to the 5-person cast and 4-piece orchestra made the experience very different from sitting in the middle of the stalls in a theatre. It's expensive, but we thought it was worth it. After trying to think of a reason to knock off a star we ended up giving it the full five.

  • Loved it. Great way to be introduced to Opera.

  • This was an excellent experience and a very intimate performance which moved through 3 rooms of this 15th Century Palazzo with the intermission with complimentary prosecco in the salon facing the grand canal. All of the La Traviata performers were amazing. Go if you get the opportunity!

  • Loved it. Such an atmospheric place to listen to opera - and the the whole production was excellent

  • What a fantastic event! In a small venue, with the audience sitting in the same room of the mansion during the show....moved from room to room and enjoyed the show so much! Would love to see another show this way!

  • This was an unusual and memorable way to spend a night in Venice. It was great to experience the opera in this venue. Because Venice is so small, it was easy to walk to the palazzo. With the use of our GPS on my smartphone, it was easy to find the location. We are not opera fans, but we enjoyed the performance. We read about La Traviata prior to attending so we had an idea of what the story was about. They do sell scripts there so one can follow along with the story. The musicians and the actors were engaged and they were right there! Many times we could have reached out and touched the actors. Thanks for the fond memories!

  • This is without a doubt one of the best things to do in Venice. Highly entertaining and in a beautiful venue. This was my husband's first opera - ever - and now he is hooked. This is opera in a small setting so even novices will get the storyline and nuances. We saw the Barber of Seville performance. Truly outstanding.

  • In the better late than never category, this was our favorite activity we did in Venice in September 2015 we saw The Barber of Seville . We love opera, and what a great experience to see one in a 15th century palazzo! Of course, there are no supertitles, but they do give you a booklet with the translation. We are thus glad we had seen this particular opera before, but with the translation and the overview in the booklet, combined with the singers and being so close to them to get the facial expressions and emotions, it was easy to follow. The only downside is the signage to get there - we are glad we left enough time to find it before we had dinner. We then found a nice restaurant nearby so we could relax, knowing that we had enough time to get back to the venue and not get lost. The palazzo is down a narrow alley on the right after you find the correct narrow canal. But so so worth it to go!

  • Best experience, just like going back in time and sitting in the ball room of a Palace and watching a professional performance and then changing rooms for the next act and so on, just amazing.
