Know More about this tour
Your professional guide will recount the background of both the famous and infamous people who are buried there. You can make a wish or, if you dare, cast a spell at the tomb of Marie Laveau. Hear spooky stories of how this voodoo master was able to be in two places at once. You'll also learn about New Orleans unique above-ground burial custom and hear various society tombs--grand mausoleums built to entomb and commemorate members of professional, benevolent, and ethnic organizations. These macabre monuments include the Italian Mutual Benevolent Society tomb which provided the eerie backdrop for Easy Rider.
Throughout your tour, youll get an in-depth view at the evolution of voodoo -- the practice of witchcraft with an African religious heritage. Often dismissed as a cult or superstition, plenty of New Orleans residents believe in its powers. Voodoo rites and traditions are still observed. Small shops sell tools of the trade with herbs, oils, powders, candles and more recognizable items such as voodoo dolls and gris-gris--voodoo amulets.
By the end of your tour, you'll understand the meaning of the gris-gris as well as take home some voodoo charms of your own with the mysterious objects found in your souvenir bag!
Authentic souvenir gris-gris bag!

We had a great tour. Our tour guide was very knowledgable, a native to New Orleans, and even had her own cemetery tomb/plot in St. Louis 1. The bus was comfortable and clean, and the group was small enough that we could easily hear everything the guide had to say. There wasn't that much "Voodoo" about the tour other than the history of Marie Laveau.
Our guide, Bill Capo, brought so much knowledge and personality to the tour. He was able to answer any questions that were presented. It was great to hear from a local about your wonderful city, full of history.
Nancy was our tour guide for this 2 hour walk.. You knew that she was interested in what she talked about and stories of the tombstones and voodoo was interesting, as we walked through this oldest cemetery. She was eager to answer questions and the pace was just right. At the end she presented us with a few things to take home.
Our group (6 women from Canada) absolutely loved this tour. There were many tours happening simultaneously within the cemetery while we were there, and we all noticed how much more knowledgeable and competent our guide Daniel was compared to the others! We really enjoyed learning about the culture of New Orleans burial practices.
Our tour guide Jim was extremely informative and very personable. We had a wonderful time touring Saint Louis 1 cemetery and learning all about it’s history and the people interred there. Some things we found to be quite amazing!
The history of the cemetery is fascinating. The guide had a lot of interesting information and delivered it well.
For our 5th Wedding anniversary (we got married in New Orleans) we scheduled a number of special events and tourist stuff, one namely a NOLA Cemetery Tour and Voodoo walking tour...our Gray Line tour guide Daniel Chick was great! Very intelligent commentary, answered questions we had about history, completely loves what he does (got displaced by Katrina and came back to be a lifelong tour guide). If you can get a chance to take this tour (mainly of St Louis Cemetery #1) definitely DO IT. You will enjoy all the history, the above ground crypts are explained very well and it make you look at New Orleans and Voodoo and many things NOLA differently. 5 starts, loved it!
This was an awesome tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the history of the cemetery. Viator, who I booked the tour through is a different story. Will never book anything through them again.
JuJu took us all over the French Quarter with stories that explained some of the mysteries of the religions and people of old times in New Orleans. Get your running shoes on because she moves. It was a great night in the rain.
Tour guide knowledgeable and polite. He was very respectful of the cemetery, the history and other groups there. Wonderful tour!
