Know More about this tour

Often regarded as the holiest site in Christendom, St Peter's Square marks the heart of Vatican City Rome's famous papal enclave. Designed by baroque architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the distinctive square is flanked on either side by a stone colonnade, said to represent Christ's open arms symbolically welcoming the world into the Catholic Church.

Collect your audio guide in St Peter's Square, and make your way toward the entrance to St Peter's Basilica. As you go, admire several sites of significance, including the northern fountain and the impressive obelisk that dates back to 13th-century BC Egypt.

Then, head inside the main attraction: St Peter's Basilica. Reputedly built on the very ground where St Peter the Apostle was crucified, the church started out as a humble chapel to which Christian pilgrims flocked. What features you see and when you see them is up to you. Use your audio guide to learn about what interests you most, and enjoy seeing the church's sights at your pace.

Over time, the church has evolved to become as ornate as it is sacred, home to priceless works of art. After skipping the long lines, head straight in and gaze up in wonder at the incredible cupolone the churchs dome - created by colorful Renaissance sculptor Michelangelo. You'll also see his beautiful La Piet sculpture, as well as various mosaic works.

Stop at the statue of St Peter and kiss or rub his foot for a blessing, before walking over to the tomb of Pope John Paul II. As you continue through the church, admire Berninis lavish, bronze canopy altar, known as the baldacchino. Positioned right in the center of the building, the altar marks the tomb of St Peter underneath.

Your tour finishes inside St Peter's Basilica. When you are done with your audio equipment, return it to the start point.

  • It was a wonderful experience!

  • Not having to wait in the hours long line was marvelous! The audio guide was comprehensive, easy to follow and the ability to listen to all or parts of it mad it easy to adjust to our slightly limited time schedule.
The only downside of this experience was a bit of difficulty in finding the exact location to sign in and begin our tour. If that area was more easily found, this would be a perfect experience.

  • Had a hard time finding the meeting point at Via di Porta Angelica, 00120 Vatican City. After asking several people, found someone involved who placed a marker on us then, were requested to proceed to the Atrium. On the way over, 4 other tourists with same markers joined us, but unfortunately we all went at the back of the Basilica and never met the guide.
However, we had a nice visit of the Basilica and had to cut it short due to the heavy rain.
Recommendations: Meeting point should be more defined. Could not see the civic number of 00120 anywhere.
Found out afterwards that the Atrium is before you enter one of the doors to the Basilica.
We were very happy just the same.

  • St. Peter's Basilica is amazing. Do not miss, but I would not purchase this again. Unfortunately, the only benefit to this purchase was the access to the shorter line. None of us in our group of 6 could access the audio guide due to poor internet connections. All of us wound up just walking through without the audio tour. Also, we figured out we really didn't even need this because the early access tour of the Sistine Chapel ended at the entrance to St. Peter's Basilica. We should have just continued on into the Basilica rather than go out to get in line again for an audio tour that did not work.

  • Overall, an excellent experience. The Viator people were helpful and efficient at gathering us up at the appointed spot, ushering us through the security scan separately from the main lines, and delivering us to the Viator audio guide center. Once we had our audio guides we entered a practically empty St Peter's Basilica at approximately 0930. We did the easily understandable audio guide in reverse to get away from the entrance crowds. The audio guide was at a level of detail not obtainable with a guided tour since there is always a time constraint in moving on. Again, overall a wonderful experience worth the expense. My only critical comment is that both of the audio guides were at full volume, and did not adjust. However, we did not exchange the guides and just used one earbud. The earbud's iPhone audio control did not operate either. Once done, the audio guide turn in table was easy to find and we were off to the dome Coppola elevator and subsequent walk up the stairs to the top which I highly recommend for a first time visitor if you can handle the physical work climbing up the stairs. Would highly recommend Viator to anyone visiting Rome.

  • Location of pick-up difficult.

  • Very informative way to tour this beautiful church at your own pace. I highly recommend it!

  • Worth the extra bucks to skip 2 hours in the Roman heat! Audio guide was cool too.

  • Highly recommends to buy skip the line to avoid long queue! Audio Guide was helpful and for me the price is ok. You at least 2 hours to enjoy the inside of St. Peter's Basilica and to really listen to your audio guide. Suggest that you do this in the morning and follow the tour with Colosseum walking tour in the afternoon.

  • The no wait portion was a failure. Yes, there was an event at St Peter's that morning Oct. 14 and a crowd, but our no-wait appointment at 1:00 PM had a One Hour wait. There was no fast entry- we were in line with everyone else, and large tour groups had far better access. They had no-wait access. No benefit to us for paying for No Wait-
