Head to the Handa Opera's waterside venue at Mrs Macquarie's Point, within the beautiful Royal botanic gardens.
What grander setting could there be for such a performance than Sydney Harbour itself, awash with the light of the city and the Sydney opera house silhouetted against the setting sun? Opera on the Harbour will open on March 22, 2019 for an exclusive four-week season, playing at night on a purpose-built floating stage on Sydney harbour. With the Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge as a backdrop. Encounter the wildness of youth and ecstasy of love as this modern day Romeo and Julietunfolds under a starlit sky.
On the mean streets of New York's West Side, two rival gangs strut their stuff. But when a Jet falls for a Shark, the stage is set for a rumble. Their wistful love story is studdedwith infectious songs including 'Somewhere', 'Maria', 'I Feel Pretty', 'America', 'Cool' and of course, 'Tonight'. As The star-crossed lovers, Maria and Tony, homegrown stars Alexander Lewis and Julie Lea Goodwin reprise the sizzling chemistry of their performances together inThe Merry WidowandThe Phantom of the Opera. An all-singing, all-dancing supporting cast takes on Bernsteins brilliant score and Jerome Robbins original electrifying choreography. Renowned director Francesca Zambello teams up with Brian Thomson and Jennifer Irwin to create a brand new production for the harbour-top stage.
Available for four weeks only from March 22 to April 21, 2019, Opera on the Harbour has become a huge part of the cultural landscape, combining all of the things Sydney does best: world-class opera, sparking wine and fine dining, and sunsets and spectacle on the Harbour's edge.
Please note:To extend our accessibility programs, we have designated the performance of West Side Story on Sydney Harbour on April 17, 2019 as a relaxed performance.
This style of performance is designed to ensure young adults with a disability and their families, or anyone who enjoys a relaxed environment, are able to enjoy the performance experience together. This relaxed performance will allow guests to come and go from their seats during the performance and venue lights will remain on at low levels. Some lighting or sound features of the show may also be adjusted minimally, but there are no significant differences to the production.
The performance will be audio-described, and those who wish to will be able to read captions on handheld devices. A Quiet Space will also be made available if a break from the show is needed and our staff can offer advice on other spaces if needed.

Overview
The critically acclaimed and wildly popular Madama Butterfly returns to the Handa on Sydney Harbour stage.
Take your seats overlooking Paradise complete with a bamboo grove, a giant moon, and a rising sun floating in the harbour. The picture-perfect backdrop of the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge twinkles with thousands of city lights as night falls.
For innocent Cio-Cio-San, love flutters on wings of desire. For brash Pinkerton, a flight of fancy is irresistible. On their wedding night, passions ignite. Yet, how ephemeral is their ecstatic embrace?
Puccinis intimate ode to unrequited love has always been shocking. East meets West, devotion meets disregard, expectation meets disappointment. In the clash, Cio-Cio-Sans dreams shatter.

Theatrics & music were good however, the story was so far removed from the original & disjointed in its form. Performers hit high notes but had trouble hitting low notes which ultimately made performances on the weaker side & not as flawless & impressive as the original. Not worth the money paid for this.

It was a great show and nice seats! The venue was outside, a bit rainy but also was very nice. I thought the venue was hard to get to.
-
Unbelievable experience seeing The Phantom of the Opera at the outdoor stage! Totally iconic. We will remember this for the rest of our lives... And we will be back! Get there around 5 to get a good table at the outdoor Opera Restaurant, and leave time to take a water taxi to the outdoor stage!

We flew down to Sydney just to attend Phantom of the Opera on the Harbour Stage. OMG what can I stay. It was so worth every cent. The performance was brilliant, the sound fantastic, especially given it is outside. The ambience of the setting was just amazing. Brilliant just brilliant.

Irresponsable management, they should have cancelled before Act 2, during the interval allowing people to leave the premises calmly and in an orderly fashion instead of creating panic under a thunderstorm and lightning as this was forecasted. The management clearly preferred to put people in danger just so they can make an income from the bars and restaurants during the interval. I wait to see whether we receive a discount or rescheduled performance. Regarding the show nothing exceptional,

Amazing experience. Hard to put into words. To watch an outdoor opera on the harbour with Sydney lit up in lights as a backdrop was unbelievable. Performance was outstanding

A beautiful night on the harbour. A spectacular performance. World class. Well done to all involved in putting on a magnificent show.
-
The whole evening was amazing. Lots of food and drink available beforehand. The show was outstanding. And the setting was just awesome.
-
The whole event was excellent. I was however disappointed in other people attire given that it was an opera. People where wearing tracksuit pants.

The show was absolutely brilliant! Amazing sets, great performers, beautiful night!!! We were lucky with the weather. I should have picked up the tickets from the box office. I didn't read that, so there was some confusion initially. We had wonderful seats. The production and whole experience was 10 out of 10!
