Wife and I booked a cruise with Oceania leaving from Papeete for May, 2018, but we booked in April 2017. We cruised here with Paul Gaugin in 2016, and it was fabulous. Then, we had had a wonderful semiprivate motor tour of Western Papeete, and learned about the culture, the ethics, and the honesty of the Polynesians. TODAY we just arrived last night for a new try. Two extra days in Papeete allows an Eastern tour with the same guide, and a Segway tour first thing, to learn about Papeete itself. We’ve really enjoyed Segway in Tampa, Bradenton, Sarasota, St. Petersburg FL. San Antonio, and New Orleans. Preconceived notions abound. It seemed that the only Segway tours in Papeete was through Viator and Trip Advisor. Months ago we paid $196 for two tours at 9 AM flying in the day before. Seeing the city up close would be good before the “big picture.” The website and my written receipt show “hotel pickup” but no one asked where we stayed. My usual e-mail confirmation, a few weeks before, showed we were scheduled. Then 5 days ago I called from Florida to Papeete 4 times throughout the days only to get recordings. 3 days ago I e-mailed about the pickup and the next day’s answer was about how to find my own ride on undependable public transportation. Late yesterday, WHILE I was on “Airplane mode” getting jet lag, Laurent from Segway, sent an e-mail stating the tour had been canceled….that I can schedule for another day, or cancel and get a refund from Viator or Trip Advisor. Yes, everybody has an “extra day” in Tahiti. I was too anxious and too trusting. I have paid many deposits, but never the full cost, for service in a foreign country or in the US. Laurent knows that I couldn’t possibly cancel in a timely fashion….I got his message at midnight the day before. And if he is going to run a small business with undependable employees, especially with other services doing his billing, he should work harder himself so that he can pay his employees better. And since people either arrive very late in the day or early in the morning after being awake all night, maybe 10 AM would be a better starting time,. Many positive reviews I’ve written for Trip Advisor, and very rarely a bad one, trying to be fair. This is my bad review for this year.
