Overview

Spend a day at Petrpolis, a mountainside retreat that once served as a summer getaway for Brazil's royalty. On this guided tour, wander through the treasures of the Imperial Museum and then visit the burial place of Dom Pedro II and his family. Marvel at the Crystal Palace, built as an extravagant gift to Princess Isabel. You will also meet the ancient Gothic Cathedral where Princess Isabel was buried along with the tombstones of D. Pedro II and his wife.

Know More about this tour

After morning hotel pickup in Rio de janeiro, take a 90-minute drive north past forests and waterfalls to Petrpolis, a favorite mountain resort known as Brazils Imperial City, nestled in the wooded hills of the Serra dos rgos.

Upon arrival at Petrpolis, start off at the Imperial Museum, housed in the former summer palace of Pedro II, Brazil's second emperor. Follow your guide into this restored Austrian-style palace built in 1845, and get a good look at how Brazils royalty once lived.

Walk by tapestries, antique furniture and jewels, and gawk at the imperial crown studded with over 600 diamonds and 77 pearls, weighing nearly four pounds (1.7 kg). See the golden quill used by Princess Isabel to sign a law that liberated Brazils slaves in 1888.

Next, admire the Gothic architecture of St Peter of Alcantara Cathedral and visit the tombstones of Brazil's last emperor, Pedro II and his family.

Walk over to a quiet park and feast your eyes on the Crystal Palace, a ballroom of glass and steel with chandeliers, all built and imported from France, as a gift to Princess Isabel from her husband. Hear about the expositions and royal parties once held here.

Purchase lunch at a restaurant of your choice in town, and feel free to ask your guide for recommendations. Your tour ends with transport back to Rio. If youve opted for the upgrade, continue on to Cervejaria Bohemia, or Bohemia Beer Factory.

Optional Visit to Cervejaria Bohemia (Bohemia Beer Factory)
Top off your visit to Petrpolis with a stop at Cervejaria Bohemia, and take a high-tech, interactive tour to learn about Brazils popular lager first produced in 1853. Youre given a coded wristband which you can use to login at the factory and link to your social media account. Learn fun facts from touch-screen games and score points, and swipe your wristband to send information to your account, allowing you to share your experiences online in real time.

Your guide takes you through the factorys exhibits. Find out all about beer from the Mesopotamian era to present day, and understand the science and art behind Bohemias brewing process. Youll get to create your own beer brand, and then drink up a glass of recently brewed, refreshing Bohemia beer.

Spend your remaining time playing interactive games or picking up souvenirs at the emporium. Or, head over to the bar and restaurant to try Bohemias specialty beers along with tasty snacks (own expense), before returning to your hotel in Rio.

I love history which is why we decided to do this "9hr" historical tour. Our guide Luchiana is knowledgeable in the history she was explaining, however there was a lack of professionalism. They started off by being 45 min late to pick us up. When we made a stop to a chocolate store many of us had issues ordering but could not get assistance from our guide as she was on her phone. We did not get to visit the Crystal palace since it is under maintenance. That is understandable but as a guide she should be informed and notify the buyer or offer some kind of discount. Also, the itenarary lists a visit to the Bohemian beer factory. The guide said this tour does not include that. When I showed her the trip advisor itenerary she was not interested at looking at it and was rude with her response. Again, no accountability or apology, forget about any offers of a discount or anything else for that matter. At the end of the trip she made sure to mention tips for the tour. That may not bother some people but it did not sit well with me being that the tour was already lacking. The tour was really only 6hours long. I would not recommend this tour.

We did this day trip a few days before Carnival. Julio, our guide, did an excellent job of educating us on the history of royalty at Petropolis and walked us through the museum that once was the Royal palace. We then spent a short time at a local cathedral and had a nice lunch stop at an inexpensive buffet. Because of heavy traffic around Rio due to Carnival, it was a very long day, but our driver was very creative in finding alternative routes which provided local street views.

Great to see an area outside of Rio. The museum was fabulous. The drive into the mountains was beautiful.

We had an amazing day in Petróplis - the tour bus picked us up exactly on time and our tour guide TT was the life and soul of the party. TT spruced things up from the moment we got on the bus - she just had so much energy and enthusiasm for life. It was incredible. The trip itself could have done without the Imperial Museum as it was a bit too long , but overall it was a great day out especially if you want to do something different from Sugarloaf, Christ the Redeemer etc. Would recommend.

The bus arrivarrivped on time although there was a lot of traffic. The guide was good had to do the talk in 4 different languages. He was very informative and took time to answer questions. Down side lunch was not included for us we could have played rs45 for the buffet but we dont eat a meal at lunchtime so was left for 45mins to sort ourselves out in an area where there wasn't a lot to see or do. At the end of the tour some of the group went on a brewery tour (extra) the rest of us where taken to a shopping street clothes and such which To be honest could have done without. All in all it was a good trip and we both enjoyed it.
