Know More about this tour

Depart from Melbourne in the late afternoon by comfortable coach, following the Yarra River through the leafy southeastern suburbs and rural countryside, before arriving at the bridge to Phillip Island. As you travel, listen to informative commentary from your guide about the sights you pass along the way.

Drive through the fishing village of San Remo as you cross the only bridge onto Phillip Island, stopping at the excellent Phillip Island Visitor Information Centre. Browse exhibits about Phillip Island's abundant wildlife, which includes koalas, fur seals, mutton birds and other migratory birds in addition to tonights star attraction, the little penguins.

Little penguins are the smallest penguin species, and the fact that the worlds largest colony of them can be easily visited at Phillip Island makes this a dont-miss opportunity! Penguin experts estimate that as many as 32,000 little penguins live on Phillip Island. During your visit, learn about conservation issues involved in protecting Phillip Island's wildlife. Revenue from ticket sales gets invested back into research, environmental protections, and education projects to ensure that the penguins and other wildlife flourish.

As the sun sets, head to the beach where you have a choice of the basic seating option on stands with tiered seating or choose the upgrade (details below) for prime penguin viewing. Watch hundreds of little penguins emerge from the sea and waddle along the sand to their burrows, where they feed their young with their day's catch of anchovies and pilchards.

Be sure to bring warm clothes as the ocean air can get cold at night. At the end of the penguin viewing, your coach returns you to Melbourne (about a 90-minute drive) to end your tour, with drop off at select Melbourne hotels.

Penguin Plus Viewing Platform
Upgrade your tour to include all of the above while viewing the penguins from even closer quarters for optimal viewing, accompanied by informative commentary from an expert wildlife ranger. Wooden seating and boardwalks provide excellent sight lines, with a maximum of 150 people permitted in the area.

  • An excellent evening of watching penguins. If you choose the evening option, eat first or bring snack because you get back to Melbourne at midnight after the 2.5 hour drive back. Viewing platform was best option for seeing penguins walk by. Adriene, our driver/guide was most informative!

  • We had a great experience. The bus driver was great and gave us a comprehensive over view of what we were seeing or going to see. We had terrific seats to watch the penguins. All in all we had a wonderful time. We will definitely use viatour again.

  • Excellent trip, and it's worth paying extra for the premium seating at the beach. Make sure to get to the beach at least 45 minutes before dusk to assure a good seat to watch the penguins come out of the ocean although you can see them up close and personal as they walk alongside the boardwalk behind the seats. Surprisingly good food at the cafe. And yes, no photos allowed I was chided by a ranger for taking a picture of the beach even before the penguins arrived! Since our tour was in January meaning a late sunset, the penguins didn't come out until after 9 PM, so we didn't get back to our hotel until after midnight it didn't help that there was road construction going on during our return trip to Melbourne.

  • A fantastic trip. Our coach driver Gary gave a really informative commentary and as we arrived earlier than expected at Phillip Island he gave us an extra tour.
The Penguin Parade itself was amazing - nature at its best.
One tip make sure you take warm clothing as it gets chilly when the Parade takes place

  • We really enjoyed this experience despite the weather being very wet. Be prepared for a long trip on the coach. The catering options at the venue are not great and it is very busy. Have your main meal of the day before you go. The guide on the coach was very good and shared lots of interesting facts and opinions en route to help pass the long journey. The VIP viewing area is well worth the extra. We would not have wanted to have visited without it. The penguins are very cute!

  • Quite a long drive but well worth the visit. The penguins were adorable and there were so many of them. It was really worth upgrading to the viewing area where numbers were limited. A thrilling experience.

  • It gets really cold especially during the year-end I think! so bring your own shawls and sweaters or you'll have to buy one from the souvenir shop like most of us did. Also, there's only one small cafe here where everyone tries to find a seat and get a meal before the 9pm viewing time if you're coming by tour bus like most of us did, they will most likely pick you up from town at 3pm for the long bus ride to Phillip Island, after which you have to get a quick meal in before the viewing as you'll be sent back to town/your hotel only by midnight!. Tip: you can try packing your own food and warm drink in a thermos flask if you don't want to queue, snatch a table and gobble down your meal. The actual viewing session is beautiful. I'd suggest like most people on this site did to top up your ticket for a premium seat as that is where the penguins start surfacing magically around 9pm and then you can see them almost at your feet waddling about and looking lost. A wonderful eye-opening experience: it was as much a viewing experience for the penguins who were looking at us as it was a viewing experience for us hoomans.

  • Worth for the visit to see the little penguins walking back from the Beach.

  • This trip is a definite must. You can't leave Australia without seeing the adorable tiny penguins walk along the beach. So adorable!
