Stop At: Chateau du Petit Thouars, Saint-Germain-sur-Vienne, Chinon, Indre-et-Loire, Centre-Val de Loire
Discover the unique history of the Chteau du Petit Thouars, a family-owned castle built in 1423 by the Dukes of Thouars. Owned by the Aubert du Petit Thouars family since 1636, the castle has been passed from father-to-son in a direct line, with a vineyard in existence on the property for hundreds of years.
Visitors will visit Cabernet Franc and Chenin Blanc vines and learn about vineyard practices in the Chinon appellation.
A leisurely stroll will take you to our troglodyte caves where our wines are vinified and aged on-site. You will be walked through French wine vinification practices.
Returning to the chteau you will taste our range of wines.
After the tasting you will be brought to a special location on the estate to enjoy your private countryside lunch (salads, cheeses, deli meats, and a special local dessert: the winemaker's tart) on a beautifully dressed table with a bottle of wine to enjoy.

One of the nicest parts of our trip to France. Sebastian and Maryella made us feel at home wandering around the beautiful fields. Loved the explanation of the winemaking process and the wine tasting was great .The picnic with fresh bread , cheeses and pate finished with a winemakers tart and accompanied by a lovely rose was the one memory of our week to France that we still talk about. We would do this again in a heartbeat. Five stars and not to be missed!!!

Tour was enjoyable but should include Chateau. Host was insightful but presentation needed work. Lunch was exceptional!

Wonderful hospitality, food and wine tasting. Really enjoyed touring the vineyards

Without a doubt, this was a fantastic choice! My husband and I drove up to the beautiful chateau and was greeted by the sweetest little fella - the chateau dog! : He was so cute and walked us around to the back where the tour began. He went on the entire tour with us and even graced us with his presence while we had our picnic. The owner and his wife were very sweet and welcoming to their chateau and vineyard.
If you've come across this activity... SIGN UP! It was definitely worth it!

We arrived at an impressive chateau and were met by our tour guide who spoke perfect English. She took us on a brief tour of the vineyard and told us about its history and how the vines are managed. We then went underground into the caves where the barrels are kept. The cave passages were dug by the builders of the chateau to extract the stone for the chateau some 400 years ago. Whlst we were there we were given a brief talk on the wine making process.
We then returned to the chateau where we were greeted by its current owner who told us, in excellent English, the fascinating history of the building and we then tasted about six different wines. A superb simple lunch was served together wth a bottle of wine. In all we were there for about 3 hours. We all thoroughly enjoyed our time and I believe it represented good value. It is possible to buy the wine they make but there was no pressure to do so. It was cold in the cave tunnels so take a jumper! -
Fantastic experience from very informative vineyard tour to the luscious picnic in the chateau grounds.with wine ! A must do experience if you are in the area.

This was an amazing experience, better than we expected. Darcy and her husband were extremely nice! The lunch in the Vines, the vine itself, the caves and the tasting experience were all amazing!!

This estate has been in Sebastin's family for over 500 years! Sebastian and his wife, D'Arcy are now living and operating the estate and vineyards!
We started with a lovely walk in the vineyards, joined by their dog and cat! D'Arcy showed our group 3 different types and areas of the vineyard and a lot of information regarding the criteria they must meet in order to label their wines appropriately.
We also toured the cellars, actual caves, where they age their wines. Michel, their winemaker was busy labeling bottles of rose for shipment.
After the walk, we were introduced to their wines with a wine tasting. As we sampled the wines, a gorgeous table was set up outdoors under the trees for our picnic. As we started to eat, the afternoon rains came and we all gathered our plates and food and wine and returned to the wine tasting room to finish lunch. There was more than enough food bread, cheese, pate, terrine, salads and it was very nicely paired with our wine choice. Dessert was a local apple tart ? with wine glaze. Yummy.
A very comfortable day. Sebastian and D'Arcy were gracious and warm and relaxed.
This is a very unique way to experience a winery.
The country in the Chinon area is wide and spread out. I would advise using a GPS for your travels. -
Such a beautiful experience this was, highly recommend. The picnic in the vineyard was romantic and picturesque and something out of a fairy tale. Touring the wine cellar and tasting all the delicious wines with Darcy was a great experience. We bought the dry white to take home! Loved this visit!
