M. Nonius Balbus was the city's major benefactor restoring and building many public buildings. On his death he was made patron and feted with many honours, detailed in the long inscription on his funeral altar.
It is thought that the building was a centre of the cult of the Emperor Augustus and the headquarters of the Collegium Augustalium (or possibly even the local curia).
The house possibly belonged to one of the town's leading benefactors, Marcus Nonius Balbus and is somewhat unusual in that it has its own private access to the adjoining Suburban Thermae to the south.
It is very important house for the elegant wooden partition remained.
The House of the Skeleton probably the aggregation of three smaller buildings, derives its name from the discovery of human remains in a second floor room in 1831.
The Central Thermae were built around the beginning of the 1st century AD and were divided, as was then the common practice, into men's and women's baths, each with their own separate entrances.

Very organized and responsive team. From the time I booked they were always quick to answer my queries. Giovanni our driver was very accommodating and professional. The guide was very knowledgeable and knew many facts about the archeological site. A bit expensive but worth it.

Both our driver Giovanni and our guide Vincenzo were wonderful. So much to see and understand and we all felt that the day was perfect.

We went to the Pompei and Herculano tour and our driver Francesco was really nice and always taking care of us. We had a fantastic day!!!

  • 19-Jul-2023

The tour was a good balance between 1) geeking out on what we know about the sites and how we know it and 2) the awe of stepping into a 2000 year old site and imagining what it must have been like to live there before the eruption and on those few days that destroyed their cities.

Informative and interesting tour by Paolo Very knowledgeable and set the information all in context Hot day but we got around the highlights of both sites

Our tour guide (Marilee? Marili? Marie-lee? sorry) was SO knowledgeable, informative, and friendly. We learned a ton about the disaster, the homes/ businesses, the materials used, the styles of decoration, the victims, historical context, etc. I also really recommend the private tour if you can— there were many people and groups around, and it helped so much to have her to ourselves. Loved seeing both the sites and got much more out of it than I might have with just a map or audio tour.

Our driver, Giovanni, was wonderful and our tour guide, Rosella was incredibly knowledgeable. Giovanni picked us up from our hotel in Sorrento, offered us water, and asked what music we preferred. He was so polite and kind. After Pompeii he dropped us for lunch at a gourmet restaurant and waited while we enjoyed a break. Rosella made Pompeii and Herculaneum come to life with interesting stories. Pompeii was overrun with tourists, and we greatly preferred Herculaneum in terms of the level of preservation. Such an incredible experience.
