Overview

The bond between Pompeii ruins and the volcano that buried it is indissoluble. This tour is a journey far back in time, almost surreal, between a city that ceased its existence in a matter of few hours and the mountain that caused its end. In the morning you will be visiting the ruins of Pompeii preserved almost intact for centuries. Stop to a local factory to learn more about the process of Cameos and Corals craft (if time permits). After lunch, visit at the crater of Vesuvius, a still active volcano, listed by Unesco as a Biosphere World Reserve.

Know More about this tour

Pompeii was a town that disappeared from the maps and from peoples memories as it got completely buried under the ashes erupted by the volcano in 79 AD. That dramatic day ended the lives of an entire bustling city to only come unearthed many centuries later. These ruins give an incredible picture of ancient romans daily life and their original urban setting: homes, shops, frescoes, thermal baths, mosaics and much more.

Included in this tour there is a stop to a Cameos and Corals workshop, to learn more about this ancient art-craft, for which the Neapolitan school is still considered of great importance. Cameos in particular are carved sea shells representing scenes of mythological deities.

Lunch to a local restaurant.

Continue this tour to the top of for a short hike to the volcanos crater. The national park of Mt. Vesuvius is listed as UNESCO biosphere reserve and it is composed by the caldera of Mt. Somma and the Grand Cone of Mt. Vesuvius. In other words, a mountain into another mountain, aka the pre-existing one got its top blown away forming a new one. There is a long history of studies on the colonization of lava by vegetation throughout different epochs. The traditional agricultural areas are diverse in fruit, vines and flowers. It became sadly famous for its eruptions in 79 AD, the deadliest of recent history. Last eruption took place in 1944, in the middle of WWII and today it is considered a dormant volcano.

Encore merci

We had a great day travelling to Pompei and Vesuvius. Despite the large crowds everything was done just fine. Valentina, our guide took really good care of us, providing information and solutions when external events (road accident) could negatively impact on our activities. The contact with the agency also was very good and staff was very friendly.

This tour was great! It included a wonderful lunch fresh pasta and sauasage with dessert and all of the tour guides were extremely friendly. Would highly recommend this tour. The one drawback was that they didnt allow time for you to shop at either stop.

The biggest thing I'd change is include all of the entrance fees in the cost. If you don't include the fees, please ensure the tour guide will accept a credit card for the entrance fees. I'd also shorten the lunch so more time can be spent at Vesuvius.

The tour was good. The only thing they should do differently is to spend less time at lunch to leave more time to explore Mt Vesuvius.

The meeting point for this tour was a little difficult to find and a simple sign for Viator Tours would make things easier. Once found though the coach was on time and the guides very good. It would have been better if the tickets for Pompeii and Vesuvius had been included in the cost of the trip to avoid the collection of money once onboard the coach. The pizza lunch was a little basic and the lunch break could have been cut significantly to allow more time at the two sites. With the temperatures reaching 35 degrees it would have been a nice touch if small bottles of water could have been supplied by the tour company for both the coach trip and site visits.
