Overview

Titian and Tintoretto are the two names that surface again and again in this magical city of bridges and canals. These two 16th-century painters have defined the way late Renaissance Venice is viewed. And with this 3-hour walking tour, you can drench yourself in their art, most of which is still exhibited in its original place. The guide leads you through galleries, churches and museums, putting the works of Titian and Tintoretto into their historic and artistic contexts.

Know More about this tour

Meet your guide in the San polo neighborhood for this 3-hour walking tour that explores the works of Titian and Tintoretto, two giants of the late Renaissance in Venice. The beauty of seeing art in La Serenissima, the common nickname for Venice, is that many of the works are still in the same places where they were originally intended to be seen.

This tour focuses on the neighborhood of San Polo. Visit the various churches and scuole, or schools, where works by Tintoretto and Titian still hang. The schools were inspired by Christian charity and committed themselves to spiritual assistance for all in the name of their patron saint. There were six Scuole Grandi (Great Schools): Misericordia, San Giovanni Evangelista, Carit, San Marco, San Rocco and San Teodoro. The Scuole Grandi erected monumental buildings, within which they placed many works representing some of the highest episodes of Venetian art.

At the Scuola grande di san rocco, view more than 50 paintings by Tintoretto as the guide explains the significance of the paintings and of Tintoretto himself, putting the painter into his historical and artistic contexts. Next, visit the Scuola grande di san giovanni evangelista to view the works of Gentile Bellini, a predecessor of Titian and Tintoretto, allowing you to see the techniques these two painters borrowed from earlier artists.

Next door is the towering Chiesa dei Frari, built by the Franciscans. Wander inside to look at two very important works by Titian, the altarpieces The Assumption of Mary and the Madonna di Ca Pesaro. At the end of the tour, youll have a better appreciation of these two artists and of Venice.

To our great surprise and opposite to our experience so far, we 2 of us were the only participants, so we had a private tour in the Basilica Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari and La Scuola Grande di San Rocco, the gems fully up to the title of the tour.
Nadia, our guide proved to be extremely knowledgeable, entertaining and patient. She explained a whealth of details about the sites, the periods and the artists. At the end of the 3! hours visit we were absolutely exhausted but also excited.
We are totally positive the the tour would have been a great success even if we were twenty!

We had a wonderful afternoon with Francesca. Her enthusiasm and passion for Venice was contagious. We visited beautiful art in quiet sanctuaries and when one of the attractions was unexpectedly closed her knowledge and resourcefulness prevailed and she lead us to other sites via other parts of Venice that we had not had the chance or pleasure to visit yet. This afternoon and our time with Francesca was truly a highlight for us we'll be back!
