The story of the gardens is one of family and legacy. Before the creation of the Butchart gardens, the land was a cement and lime stone quarry. Jeannie Butchart, Mr. Butcharts enterprising wife, created something beautiful where the land was depleted by the extraction of lime stone.
Jennie brought topsoil from neighbouring farms and little by little the familys abandoned quarry blossomed into a most spectacular garden. Jennie continued to create a Japanese garden that meets the sea, and a Mediterranean garden where tennis courts use to be. Future generations of the Butcharts contributed to the splendor of these gardens. Fireworks, concerts, and a childrens pavilion with a whimsical merry go round are now a part of the extensive show garden.
