Know More about this tour

The tour starts with an early start by meeting in downtown La Paz. We drive out of town headed west towards the Chilean border through a paved road. Switch into a smooth dirt road halfway and continue through unspoiled countryside viewing llamas and alpacas in the thousands. The drive takes approximately 3.5 hrs. provided traffic in town is as usual.

Around mid-morning, we arrive at the base of a 1.5 hour hiking trail. The landscape is high-altitude Altiplano (high plain, 3.800m) covered by springy moss and porcupine-shaped bushes. We take our time to hike up to a secret pre-Inca, mysterious burial site located on the top of a flat-topped mountain (4.100m) often known as a mesa. We enjoy the striking views of the endless highlands with perfect cone-shaped Mountain Sajama in the distance while we walk among beehive-shaped tombs containing remains of past peoples from the 13th century. Our hike takes approximately 2.5 hours.

After a scenic lunch, we continue our drive past a couple of small villages before we arrive at the base of our second hike to the City of Stone. This hike is very similar to the morning one in length, but the views are different and this time we get to wander through a maze of rocky outcrops shaped as anything the mind can make of them. After this hike, we stop by a traditional village for amazing photo opportunities. Highlights include herds of llamas and alpacas peacefully grazing around, traditional lifestyle, dilapidated but picturesque colonial churches and a typical day in the Bolivian Altiplano.

At the end of the afternoon we make our drive back to town to arrive between 8-9 pm.

This trip is ideal for travelers looking to get out of town and see the traditional countryside not far from La Paz

This trip is ideal for those who like to mix a driving sightseeing tour with plenty of physical activity

You should ideally be at least moderately acclimatized to be able to hike up and down for a few hours at high elevation (most of our past customers have agreed that the hikes are not very demanding themselves except for the altitude around 4.000m. but taking it slow it is easily doable. However, you should be decently fit to be able to enjoy this trip fully)

The area is literally unknown in the typical tourist trail and not mentioned in any guidebook

The landscape and temperature are those of the typical Bolivian highlands, dry, sunny and cold (during the day when it is sunny temperature is pleasant, around 10-15C). Bring appropriate clothing and sun protection
