We had a fabulous day with Catia who is vivacious, energetic, and consumed with continuing the traditional recipes from generations in her family. It was very hands-on, from separating the eggs for tiramisu and kneading dough for the Bigoli pasta which is a local specialty in the Veneto. We picked tomatoes and zucchini flowers from her organic backyard garden, then made a fresh tomato sauce for the pasta. We learned to batter and deep fry the delicate flowers. The most fun was using her Nonna’s antique pasta press to push the dough through a special disk for Bigoli. Catia set a beautiful table with her family’s china and silverware for our tasting. It is so rare to see the real Italy when traveling. This unique experience allowed us to spend time with an Italian family and a woman who embodies that true Italian spirit and genuine joy in living.
