Traveler Reviews

Our guide, Oliver, although friendly, wasn't too talkative. We had to ask questions before he said anything. On the way back to our hotel, our driver showed off his driving skills by turning our Toyota Sienna minivan into a race car. He was down shifting on the highway as if he were on a race track. Now I know that a minivan can also go fast!

Yangmingshan is the location of the first summer home of Chiang Kai-shek. It's now a museum art exhibit area. The original house burned down in 2007 and the current one is a replica. In another nearby location, there are some volcanic geysers and pools and a hiking trail. But during the time of our visit, it was drizzling and foggy so we couldn't see much and we couldn't walk the trail.

Lunch of fresh seafood at a seaside town was good, although food portions were not that big. Try the sauteed mountain vegetables.

The Yehliu Geopark looked interesting from the pictures of other posts. Turned out that the whole park was just full of sandstone rock formations and tourists! The famed Queen's Head was just another rock formation that has no historical significance and wasn't even that big. If you wanted to have a photo taken with the Queen, you had to wait a long time in line. I think the Queen's Head was chosen as the marketing icon for the whole geopark. Overrated attraction, unless you're into rocks.

Jiufen was also overrated and a real hassle. There was vehicular traffic going up to the mountain town and even worse pedestrian traffic through its narrow alleyways, surrounded by wall to wall souvenir shops. The mass of humanity in the alleys was incredible. There was even a choke point in one four way intersection where bodies literally ground to a halt for some minutes. No one was giving way! Probably the only places worth visiting in Chiufen are a couple of rustic tea houses art shops, which our guide didn't even know about.
