Know More about this tour

The tour starts in the morning at the hotel where you will meet with your travel guide. You will drive south, crossing the Danube River which separates Romania from Bulgaria. Not far from the border is the charming medieval city, named Veliko Tarnovo, located on the Yantra River. With a very rich history, the town was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire and it attracts tourists with its eye-catching architecture. You will learn more about this remarkable city from your guide, walking on the cobble streets. Up on the hill, you will discover the fortress of Tsarevets, settled in the 4th century, surrounded by thick walls. On our way back, we will stop at the nearby village of Arbanassi, a World Heritage Site and make a stop at the famous Nativity Church.

Tour highlights:

The fortress of Tsarevets

Situated at an altitude of 206 meters, it was settled in the 4th century. It became famous after the Second Bulgarian Empire established the capital at Veliko Tarnovo, often being compared to Rome or Constantinople in greatness. 400 residential buildings, over 22 churches and 4 monasteries where discovered on site. The main landmarks of the complex are the Royal Palace located in the center, from where 22 kings ruled the country; Baldwin's Tower- built in 1930 and the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Holy Ascension of God which in the 12th century became the seat of the Bulgarian patriarch. The Royal Palace includes Throne Room, the Palace Church and the Royal Chambers. Actually, the patriarchate on Tsarevets was a fortress of its own, having 2 defensive towers and an entrance on its west wall and the Patriarchal cathedral was situated in the middle of its courtyard.

Arbanassi

The village was founded in the late 15th century by Christians and its known for the rich history. Nowadays, there are 7 monasteries and churches dating from the 16th century until the 18th century. The oldest church in Arbanasi is the Nativity church, famous for its mural paintings from inside the chapel, created in 1632, which represent important scenes from St. John the Baptists life, the patron of the chapel. The paintings in the nave represent the Feasts, the Passions and the Miracles of Christ.

I booked this tour wishing to see more of the neighbors this beautiful country has, as suggested by my travel agent and I loved every minute of it! Florin is a great tour guide, we made jokes and he offered me some home-made pie his wife made the previous evening! He is very professional and knows a lot about everything. I am not a history lover, but the passionate way he explains everything, made me understand and remember everything!

The staff at the company contacted me at the hotel and they explained to me everything step by step, they were very kind to help me with some restaurant suggestions while in Bucharest.

The car was clean and had AC, water was provided for the whole trip - it was incredibly hot outside, and Florin suggested for lunch a wonderful restaurant with a view!

This trip is really a jem, I would totally recommend it!

Must have comfortable shoes, the tour includes some walking!

    Thank you again,
    Marie

Our tour guide was amazing! Her name was Claudia and she works for Rolandia Agency. She make you feel like if you were on journey with some friends! All the way to Bulgaria she explained not only the history of both countries but also their costumes, their traditions, their normal life! After the visit to Tsarevets Fortress we had a wonderful lunch on a restaurant chosen by Claudia. Then after some shopping we proceed to Ivanovo to visit the religious caves on the rocks. Very quite and peaceful. At all the tour Claudia felt everything she can to let us feel a unique experience! Ah! Thanks for the tip to our dinner at that day in Bucharest!!

It's a good trip but it's a heck of a long time on the road and we experienced a very slow border crossing in the morning. One of the three places we had booked to see was closed across December, due to the cold weather, so should never have been part of the offer at this time of year. (Our guide did take us to see the outside).Other two places were interesting, well presented by our guide. Our guide for the day, Christi, was very friendly, thoughtful helpful and upbeat and looked after us really well.

My guide, Claudia, was perfect to discover places where my family grew up. The rythm of the tour was great and she was as interesting as entertaining. More than 5 stars for the whole experience.

Another great tour with this company!

I had the luck to have the same tour guide, Christy and he recommended a lovely restaurant in the old town the lunch is not included in the price, by the way which had amazing food!

The history is amazing, you get to know so many things about the Bulgarian history during the trip!

By the way... Make sure you wear comfortable shoes!!

An interesting tour with breathtaking views! If you are going to Bucharest, defintely recommend a guided private tour to Bulgaria. I found Andrew knowledgeable and funny, providing me interesting details and historical reference for the Veliko Tarnovo which was Bulgaria's old capital.

We went by private car for this, which I highly recommend because the border could be quite long if there is a group going.
Our guide Valentine was outstanding!! Being a private tour with just me, my friend and our driver made for a nice leisurely day.
Our lunch was by far the best meal I had well on our trip.
