You will have the chance to see their original manuscripts, Art collections and precious jewels, also to visit all those places that have seen this powerful family play a leading role for the City of Florence. Our tour starts at Palazzo Medici Riccardi, the first Medici residence, purchased and enlarged in 1659 by the Riccardi family. We will of course pay a visit to Cappelle Medicee, the Medici Chapels, located inside San Lorenzos Basilica, once the parish of choice for the Medici family and the sacred place of burial of the family members. The burial monuments of Giuliano and Lorenzo de Medici, built by Michelangelo, are still considered a masterpiece of architecture and Renaissance sculpture. We wont miss an opportunity to relax and enjoy a nice aperitif in Via deMedici, where the family established their first residence and in 1169 and had a celebratory tower built, in the Old Market district of San Tommaso. Our half day terminates with a visit to Palazzo Vecchio and its tower, the famous Torre di Arnolfo'. This boasts a small cell, called the Alberghetto, in which Cosimo de Medici and Savonarola were imprisoned. The tower bells, three, still function today and its flag features Marzocco, the lion symbolising the power of the people.
If you fancy spending the entire day with us, after the visit to Arnolfos Tower we have planned a privately chauffeured tour of the Villa Medicea in Castello and its marvellous surrounding park in the afternoon, following a fantastic lunch break with typical delicious Tuscan food of course. The Villa Medicea is an ancient complex that boasts, in addition to the majestic villa itself, a wide garden, considered amongst the most beautiful in Italy. The last stop on our tour is the Villa Medici of Petraia, a true jewel in the Florentine territory, placed on a panoramic position in Castello, a small Tuscan hamlet. Previously refuge for the Medici family, a place where leaving the exhaustion of the city behind, today this mansion offers its visitors a spectacular ambiance, frescoed rooms with precious antique furniture and a lush park with breathtaking views.
