Our guide, Valeria, was very knowledgeable and a real problem solver. When I booked the tour, I was very specific about what we wanted to see, but upon arrival at the Hermitage I told Valeria what was most important for us and she said many of those things were not included. She immediately spoke with her office and fixed everything, including changing our lunch to dinner so we could spend 7 1/2 hours seeing everything we wanted.

Valeria explained both the history, art and furnishing's importance. She was very good at getting us around all the big tour groups....the museum is mobbed with busloads of tourists both from the cruise ships and generic tours and it makes it very hard to see the top art, like the Rembrandts.

Tour books recommend seeing both the gold and diamond rooms which can only be toured with a Hermitage guide, tickets purchased separately. If you only have time for one, see Diamond, it includes representatives of what is in Gold Room.
