The incredible harmony of this square and the stunning beauty of its buildings has meant that in the past they were nicknamed "Miracles". You will visit the charming Cathedral, a model of Pisan Romanesque architecture, dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta and located in the center of Piazza dei miracoli. From the ornamental point of view, there are many styles that you can find in the construction: classics, late antiquities, Lombard-Emilian, Byzantine, Arab and Roman. The Cathedral has in fact a Latin cross-shaped plant with a gorgeous ellipsoidal dome with a style of inspiration Islamic. Delimited by two rows of monolithic granite columns, the central nave is flanked by four spacers spaced by colonnades of smaller dimensions, over which extensive matrons extend. It covers the central nave with a wooden coffered ceiling. Rich and sumptuous is the decorative apparatus of the Pisa Cathedral. Even outside you can admire different styles: white and black arabic drome, both in zones and bands, and a massive use of reuse materials from Roman monuments in order to emphasize the greatness of Pisa.
The tour continues then with the visit of the round-shaped Baptistery, the largest in Italy. Designed and built to remember the first event of Christian life of every man, it is dedicated to St. John Baptist. The heterogeneity of the present styles (Romanesque and Gothic) is due to the fact that the building has been carried out on several occasions. You can be fascinated by the interior of the Baptistery, completely bare by the point of view of furniture and architectural structures except for simple columns, and mystical features conferred by the particular echo that you perceive when you speak. The Baptistery is in fact equipped with exceptional acoustics that make it a real musical instrument. At the center you can admire the Baptismal Source, initially illuminated by a light coming from a ceiling opening, now covered by the Dome.
Finally, you will discover the original Camposanto, the Monumental Cemetery with the splendid 14th century cloister and frescoes, delimiting the square to the North. In the lawn at the center of the cloister there are many sarcophagi and tombs of Roman origin, used for the burial of prestigious men, while in the corridor floor you will find tombs of noble writers. Here you will also be able to admire many works of art.
