We were looking for conversations with small crafters, learning about the history of their stores and crafts. What we got was a not-to-subtle push to buy from well established higher end shops. We wanted to talk with the shop owners. We got a guide who seemed more interested in having his own conversations than translating for us. Disappointing.
I just wrote a review and it was not published. I'll try again! Viator tours are usually AWESOME. We've been to Spain and other parts of Italy and have wonderful guides. This tour was laughable. Infact, we 4 travelers all agreed it will be the highlight of our Milan tour because it was so funny/awful. Our guide was late. NO PROBLEM. We know that happens. But, we took off on foot and went to 4 places : a tobacco/pipe shop, a diamond shop, a wine shop and a leather shop. We don't smoke. We don't drink wine and we were not interested in diamonds but we went with a smile. They were merely STORES which we had passed in previous days! We did not buy anything which made us feel badly for the salespeople. YES, these shops were HISTORICAL, family run shops but as modern as the Milan environment would allow. Our guide knew these shops because he knew who to talk to. It was such a waste of our time and money. Maybe a different guide would have taken us someplace different but I doubt it. You too will probably just stay in the shopping area. Viator should take this off their offerings if it is what we experienced. We took another Viator tour while we were there in Milan and it was excellent. Just be careful of THIS tour!
Roberto was very knowledgeable and friendly. He included lots of extra info about the area and #39;s history which was great.
The tour was based on a relaxed walk around Milan and included visits to some small craft family run businesses which have survived over hundreds of years. I found this very interesting and enjoyed learning about their skills and how they have maintained their business within todays market place. The guide we had was very accommodating and included some additional visits along the way because we had shown a particular interest in something. We were introduced to a couple of eating places which proved useful, one was the roof top terrace which was part of a department store which we would have never considered, the views were very impressive. The tour lasted well over 3 hours and we did this on the first day of our trip which proved to be useful because it made us more aware of what Milan had to offer.
