Stop At: The Alhambra, Granada, Province of Granada, Andalucia
On a rocky hill that is difficult to access, on the banks of the River Darro, protected by mountains and surrounded by woods, among the oldest quarters in the city, the Alhambra rises up like an imposing castle with reddish tones in its ramparts that prevent the outside world from seeing the delicate beauty they enclose.
Originally designed as a military area, the Alhambra became the residence of royalty and of the court of Granada in the middle of the thirteenth century, after the establishment of the Nasrid kingdom and the construction of the first palace, by the founder king Mohammed ibn Yusuf ben Nasr, better known as Alhamar. The fortress became a citadel with high ramparts and defensive towers, which house two main areas: the military area, or Alcazaba, the barracks of the royal guard, and the medina or court city, the location of the famous Nasrid Palaces and the remains of the houses of noblemen and plebeians who lived there.

We had George (Jorge) as a guide. He spoke at least 5 languages and was so knowledgeable and interesting. He got us in to see everthing even though we were late due to flight cancelation. The tour was shortened due to our flights late arrival but Santia helped us arrange a version that suited our tight schedule at the last minute. With a great effort on the part of George and Santia we had a fantastic tour. Do not miss Alhambra!!
Our tour leader, Gus (Gustavo) was very knowledgeable, personable, and lively. He gave us a very informative, enjoyable tour, and he was able to answer our many questions on a wide variety of topics. He's been guiding tours for 15 years, plus being a Granada native who was fascinated with the Alhambra even as a child. So his knowledge was extensive and his interest was genuine. We really enjoyed the two hours with him, and we learned a great deal.
Alberto was wonderful and we very much enjoyed this tour. He seemed to really enjoy his job and the location, and he was a wealth of knowledge. He was very accommodating to our questions. Be sure to bring photo ID. A highlight of our time in Spain!
Our guide, Gustavo, was excellent.incredibly well informed and made the tour feel special even though he does it day in day out. He highlighted parts of the buildings and the gardens that I am sure would not be noticed without such an expert guide. I can not recommend this tour and the guide any more highly than saying this is a must if you go to Granada.
Natalie was a terrific guide providing excellent information as we wandered through the site. She knew how to avoid the crowds allowing us to experience it all at a proper pace. By this time in our trip we were tired of group tours and crowded sites. This experience was a real treat!
Not worth the money. Would not recommend. You could do better or just as good with free app tours by Rick Steves for example or just using a written guide. Viator had me scheduled for 9am but when I arrived I was told my tour was at 10am so I had to wait an hour and a half. Tour was mediocre. Viator was a disappointment. I had several questions they basically told me to call the local tour company who only had a voice mail response. They never called back. Unacceptable and fly by night if you ask me. Would not recommend Viator who leaves you on your own, they get your sale and basically do not care after that.
Private tour with outstanding guide - friendly, extremely knowledgeable, fascinating cultural insights.
My family and I arrived about 20 minutes before the scheduled time of 9am for the private tour of Alhambra and Generalife by Granavision, and the guide, Alberto was there and the tour started immediately. Very good first impression.
He spoke in excellent English. And was very enthusiastic about sharing the history and the numerous architectural styles of the Alhambra complex.
During the tour through the gardens, Generalife, his well-versed knowledge of the various plants clearly showed through.
The services provided by Alberto was excellent!
We thoroughly enjoyed our private tour of the Alhambra. Our tour guide, Beatriz A. I. was fluent in English and was very knowledgeable about the history and the myths of the beautiful Alhambra. With a private tour, Bea was able to engage directly with us and our teenagers, which kept their attention far better than any group activity we had tried. It was pricy but worth it. Well done.
At the top of our bucket list when we visited Spain in May was to see Alhambra (and Generalife). In reading some of the on-line comments from others who had visited those sites, it became clear that to maximize our time and the quality of the experience that a private tour was the way to go. In our entire two weeks in Spain, this was clearly the best spent money and experience we had. Our tour guide, Eduardo, was absolutely fantastic. In fact, ask for him when you book the private tour, because he was amazing. His English was flawless, his knowledge of the history, architecture, religions, cultures, plant-life was amazing. He is a professor when he isn't giving tours and it shows. He was patient, funny, and insightful. Having a private tour was ideal, because the Alhambra is massive and having someone who could answer every question and provide insights and information as we made our way around the site was almost essentiall. In fact, I can't imagine that the experience would have been remotely comparable without a private tour and without Eduardo. I would strongly encourage anyone going to the Alhambra to avoid the limitations of those pre-recorded headsets and the frustration of large tour groups, pay a few more dollars/euros, and do the private tour. And I would use Viator (their communication was outstanding) and Eduardo, because their tour and this experience was the highlight of our visit!
